Dr. George E. Thomas

May 21, 1945 - December 12, 2020

Dr. George Ellis Thomas succumbed to COVID-19 on December 12th, 2020 at United Memorial Medical Center in Houston, Texas. A lifelong resident and the youngest of three siblings, George was born on May 21, 1945 in Beaumont, Texas.

He graduated from Beaumont High School in 1963, where he was voted Class Favorite and Senior Class President. He continued his education as a math major at Lamar University. An active member of the college community, George joined the Epsilon Kappa chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha, where he developed lifelong friendships with Mike McCrosky, Joe Trum, Bill Coffey and Diana Coffey. George also served as both the 1965 Social Chairman and 1966 Rush Chairman, a record recruitment year. During his time in college, he was a member of the Blue Key National Honor Fraternity and from 1965-1967 a member of Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.

After graduating in 1967, George continued his dream to become a physician by attending medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, TX. In addition to his many academic achievements in medical school, George was also a member of the Phi Beta Pi Fraternity. In the Fall of 1971 George moved to Dallas and began his internship at Baylor University Medical Center. During that same year he would complete an externship at Presidio US Army base, San Francisco, CA. There he saw many of his friends and colleagues off to serve in the Vietnam War. He returned to Baylor July of 1972 to begin his residency in Internal Medicine.  In 1975, his final year at Baylor, George was chief resident, another testament to his dedication, intelligence, and desire to always do his best. He then continued his medical career by practicing in Dallas at the prestigious Dallas Medical and Surgical Clinic.

After 11 years in Dallas, he decided to return home to Beaumont.  George would go on to found his own practice from the ground up, with the mission to provide compassionate, quality healthcare, known today as Beaumont Internal Medicine and Geriatric Associates, BIMGA.   George was board certified in both Internal Medicine and Geriatrics and has humbly served our community for 50 years. George met his beloved wife Kathleen in 1987, at a hospital beach party and promptly was enamored by her. After dating for several years, in 1991 George and Kathy were married at their infamous “Howdy Neighbor Farm”, the site for many social gatherings and parties.  In 1998, George and Kathy adopted their only daughter, Maris Emma.  The only thing George loved more than serving his community as a doctor, was spending time with his family. George always supported Kathy and Maris’s endeavors, no matter how unconventional. He always doted on them and put them first. George’s hobbies included fishing, playing the stock market, and sports of all kinds, but particularly baseball, even naming his only child after a Yankee’s player. He also loved traveling with his family as well as his friend, Terry & Nancy Shipman, Barbara & Bill Smith, Jan & Mike Dorian, and Tony & MaryGrace Levacy. George always made room for his beloved daughter to join on their adventures and looked forward to seeing the world. He also had a soft spot for furry friends. He never wanted the animals Maris brought home, but would quickly be found with his newest pal, sitting with them every day and sneaking them popcorn. While hospitalized, he expressed his wishes to be reunited with them at home. There will never be the right words to describe the love that surrounds George, but we will forever cherish him and hold his memory near, carrying on his legacy of compassion and selflessness.

George is preceded in death by his parents, George T. and Emma Thomas, and his nephew Edward Brown “Grip” Gripon.

He is survived by his wife of 29 years Kathleen “Kathy” Thomas, his daughter Maris Emma Thomas, sisters Carolyn DuBois and Marilyn Gripon, as well as a very large and loving family, innumerable friends, and his incredible office staff and partners of BIMGA who he loved dearly.

There will be a Celebration of Life when it is safe to gather.

Dido to all above. Dr. Thomas was the best physician I've ever known. In addition to that,, he knew baseball trivia. better than anyone. I would throw trivia questions to him and the only ones he did not get were such obscure factoids that I was pretty sure he would not know the correct answer. Sometimes, after giving it some thought, he would get even the obscure ones. There was one, that I absolutely knew he would not get, well, he DID. I knew he was really sick when he did not respond to my last trivia question. He did answer the previous one, correctly the day before. I will miss you Doc. You have left a big hole in a lot of lives. Nancy and I extend our deepest condolences to Kathy, Maris, and all of George's family.

We played baseball. basketball, and everything else that kids did together during the 50s He was known affectionately to us as "Little George". Although he was small in statue, George was BIG in everything else he accomplished. We lived about two blocks from each other. I have fond memories of all the fun we had together many years ago. Great Friend. Great Man. Rest in peace "Little George".. May God be with you my friend.

Of course the family and patients knew George better than I did. But before they knew him we were in medical school together at Galveston and in the same fraternity. Always looked sharp, always a good sense of humor and a good 2nd baseman on our softball team. I attended his reception into the first medical group he joined in Beaumont. We practiced in the same building for many years and talked numerous times about patients in common but did not cross paths often. Because of the person he was this is not just a loss of a life but a loss in the lives of his family and patients as well.

The memories we have with Dr. George will forever be in our memories. I always had great conversations about baseball with him, I remember texting back and forth during the Astros World Series win and seeing him in t.v.! The man was full of life and has a special place in our hearts. Love and prayers are with you always.

Bill Smartt

George and I spent many nights at each other’s house growing up. When at my house, sometimes our tempers would get the better of us and he would call his mother to come get him. By the time she arrived, we had made up and she turned around and went home. At his house it was yard games. There were many, but the best one was probably kick the can. George was my mother’s doctor in her final years. A fine doctor, a fine person.

William P. Allison

I'm another one who started Averill School in 1950 and graduated BHS in 1963. We were good friends in our younger years and remained friends through high school. Some have written of his love of baseball but I'm here to tell you he was a hell of a good basketball player. We played many rounds of one-on-one and "Horse" at his house and a few at mine. By late high school I was 6'6" and George ("Little George") remained at 5'3-4". However, I had a renowned 2" vertical leap and George could jump and float. Besides, he had really good technique and a beautiful shot. Two final thoughts about George. He never objected to being called "Little George" when we were younger. When we got older, he incorporated into his persona and used it as a positive and never let his lack of height get to him. I also never beat him in one-on-one because I had that unwieldy size and he had the techniques. The second is that from George's obituary it seems he practiced exactly the same type of medicine as my father did. It does not surprise me that so many Beaumonter's feel like he was a great doctor who did not do medicine by the numbers but did medicine by the patients. He cared! What better tribute could a physician receive?

dENISE Blain Dale
