Dwayne Vinson Overstreet

August 13, 1931 - December 12, 2021

Dwayne Vinson Overstreet was born on August 13, 1931, to James Vinson Overstreet and Opal Hendrix Overstreet. A proud life-long resident of Honey Island, he built his home across the street from where he was born in 1965 and lived there for the rest of his days.

After a whirlwind romance, he married the love of his life, Shirley Ann Schull on March 1, 1951. Through the next fifty-six years they were always together. Raising a family, traveling, camping, spending time with good friends and pursuing their mutual passion for fishing and hunting. He was quick to proudly brag that Shirley more often than naught out-fished him.

A graduate of Honey Island High School Class of 1948, Dwayne went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Stephen F Austin University in 1953. After trying out teaching and banking, he decided to further his education at South Texas School of Law. He earned his law degree and passed the bar in 1957. Dwayne began his law career under the tutelage of R.A. ” Booger Red” Richardson.  As County Attorney from 1961 to 1973, then in private practice, he served the citizens of Hardin County for more than 4 decades.

To those who knew him… he was fair and honest in business, loyal and generous to family and friends, ever steadfast in his faith, a fierce domino player, an avid debater, quick with a joke and always willing to help a person in need.

“The Good Lord blessed me my whole life.  I had loving parents, a wonderful wife, healthy children, a career I enjoyed and plenty of time to fish. It was my responsibility to give those blessings back to others.”  Dwayne V Overstreet

Dwayne is survived by his sons, James Vinson Overstreet and his wife, Joline, of Kountze; Byron David Overstreet, of Broaddus; and Royce Dwayne Overstreet, of Honey Island; daughter, Rhonda Lynn Chatelain and her husband, Randy, of Kountze; grandchildren, Melanie Ann Guidry, Kasey Lynn MacMillan, Amber Nichole Boudreaux, Michael Brandon Overstreet, Mariah Michelle Heil, Brittany Gail Giacomo, and Jackson Boone Overstreet; and fourteen great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Vinson and Opal; his wife, Shirley; and grandson, Bryan Dustin “Dusty” Overstreet.

A gathering of Mr. Overstreet’s family and friends will begin at 12:00. p.m., with his funeral service at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, December 16, 2021, at Broussard’s, 490 Cemetery Road, Silsbee. What a good man always there to help a person even when I wasn’t aware I needed help. Always family.

My thoughts, prayers, and love are with each of you.

    I will see you again????

I was so sad to hear of Dwayne’s passing. He was a great friend to our family and spent time with my Mom and Dad (Pat and Charlie Laird) fishing and hunting in Colorado. I think that Daddy and Jerry Freeman probably meet him at the gates to Heaven. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. May your memories give you comfort in the days and years to come. We love ya’ll.

    Cheryl J Bean says:

Another Kountze legend goes. His oldest son my classmate. Knew his family all my life. Prayers for his family and friends.
