Elizabeth “Betty” Young Sutton
Elizabeth “Betty” Young Sutton, 88, of Beaumont, died Sunday, June 19, 2022. She was born on February 8, 1934, in Houston, to Ethel Elizabeth Dykes and Owen Overton Young. Betty graduated with a Master of Arts in Romance Languages from Rice University in Houston in 1958, where she also met her husband, Walter.
Betty inspired many students over her thirty plus years of teaching French at several high schools including Hebert High School, Ozen High School, Central High School, which are now United High School on Fannett Road, and West Brook High School. After retiring she enjoyed watching her beloved grandsons grow and celebrating their achievements and accomplishments. Betty’s love for others led her to become a volunteer at St. Elizabeth Rehabilitation Center. She made many friends through the years as she worked tirelessly doing whatever task she was given. Betty received much recognition and many awards for her service and dedication. She was a loving neighbor and those who knew her loved her as well. Betty will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, and Granny Betty. Friends of Miss Betty have many fond memories of their time with her, and she will not be soon forgotten.
Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Lisa Sutton, of Richmond; grandsons, Cameron, Garrett and Zachary Sutton, all of Richmond; nephew, Roger Young of Waco; cousin, Dixon Bennett and his wife, Ginny, of Houston; numerous other loving relatives, friends, and neighbors; and she is already very missed by her faithful feline companion, Tigger.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Walter Sutton; and her only son, Robert Allan Sutton.
In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to an organization of your choice in remembrance of Betty Sutton.
A gathering of Mrs. Sutton’s family and friends will begin at 4:30 p.m., with her memorial service to follow at 6:00 p.m., Sunday, June 26, 2022, at Broussard’s, 2000 McFaddin Avenue, Beaumont. Her cremation arrangements were handled through Broussard’s Crematorium, under the direction of Broussard’s, Beaumont

Betty became my dear friend as exercised together in warm water aerobics for many years. We were privileged to meet Allen when we dropped her off in Houston on our way to Austin. I think she was one of the most Inteligent and kindest person I have ever known. I will miss our conversations about the books we read and her family she adored. And, I apologize to the family for missing her service as we were out of the country.
Betty Sutton was my French teacher at Forest Park High School during the ’60’s. I took her class for 3years because she was nonthreatening, quick, witty, and fun! When you walked into her classroom you were immersed with French culture. She allowed us to choose a French name and that was what she called us…forever! I was the only one who didn’t choose a name because she immediately called me “Petite Noir!” (My last name was Black). And I loved that she named me herself! She kept all the latest French magazines in her class and we could look thru them when we were done with our work…It’s where I discovered Brigitte Bardot, short skirts with opague hose – all the latest styles from Paris! She also gave out stickers for rewards – they were University stickers – all the Texas universities and more. It was great exposure for us to learn about them. She was the only high school teacher I ever had that rewarded us that way and I loved it!!!
One quick story – I was running for Student Council Parliamentarian and made campaign posters – I used all black posters (since my last name was black) and I painted Black Power for Parliamentarian in white…I put them up in the halls early before school and by noon they had all been taken down by the administration. (This was the 60’s and there was racial unrest). I was crestfallen that all my time and effort was thrown away. But when I got to Mrs. Sutton’s class that afternoon she greeted me with a big smile and laugh telling me she loved my posters and hated to see them removed. My spirits were immediately lifted and just hearing that some one appreciated my humor too was enough for me! She was so kind to me and I will never forget it!

Betty was my husband’s teacher at Forest Park and daughter’s French teacher at West Brook. They both remember her with much fondness especially my husband. I know she will be missed by her family and friends.
Mrs. Betty was an asset to the Outpatient Rehabilitation Center. She loved lunchtime celebrations and quickly became part of our family.
She lived every day to it’s fullest and always looked for a way to give a hand. We will have a hard time filling her shoes but will do our best to continue her legacy.
To her family: Lisa, Cameron, Garrett and Zach- we have never met but I feel like I know each of you. Your grandmother was so proud of you boys. She told us about every achievement, milestone and of course graduation. She alway had a great story and wisdom to share. Please remember how much she loved each of you and find peace that she will always be watching over you.
Betty and I were French-teaching colleagues for many years, first at Hebert High School and then at West Brook. She had such a positive nature, and she always encouraged all those around her. I am no longer in Beaumont and was very saddened to learn of her passing. May she rest in peace.
Thank you so much to Mrs. Sutton for always having a welcoming place for the friends of Allan growing up! She was always a constant support group for us when needed.

The Hebert High School Class of 1982 (last class of Hebert before we merged with Forest Park to form Westbrook) would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family on the passing of a great Educator. We all remember Mrs. Sutton from our days walking the halls at Hebert High School. Whether you took French from her or not, you always got a smile and Bonjour in passing. Ms. Sutton and I worked for years together, first at Forest Park HS, then for years at West Brook HS. She also taught both of my daughters at WB. One of the most amazing people and best teacher you could ever meet. On behalf of my daughters and me, you will be missed.

I remember Mrs. Sutton from the days she taught at Forest Park. She was very kind and caring to her students. I was reacquainted with Betty when we both did water aerobics at the Rehabilitation Center. It was fun getting to know her again as a friend instead of a student. Rest in peace Betty. You will be missed.
Whenever you asked Betty how she was doing, her reply was always, “Fantastic!” A perfect answer for a fantastic person. She made an impression and will be missed.
