Elizabeth Phelps

December 31, 1939 - February 4, 2022

Elizabeth Ann Duhon Phelps, 82, of Winnie, died Friday, February 4, 2022, at Christus Southeast Texas – St. Elizabeth, Beaumont. She was born December 31, 1939, in Hamshire, to Ada Bertrand Duhon and Joseph Octa Duhon.

The word ‘Matriarch’ in the dictionary is defined as, “a woman who is the head of a family or a tribe”, and what a tribe we have. There is no better word to describe this wonderful woman. Elizabeth was a first-generation college graduate who inspired her children to follow in her footsteps. To those of us that got to call her Meme, she was storyteller; an eye drier; relentless encourager; Bible reader; wooden spoon grabber; hard loving Meme; and a prayer woman of God. She knew the Bible front to back and could quote a verse at any time, for anything. She used to tell us about Heaven and what it would be like to be there and to never be afraid because its such a beautiful and happy place. Well, now she is there with her parents and her brothers and sisters, walking on those “streets of gold”. We can take immense joy and comfort in knowing that she has the most beautiful wings in Heaven and is, without a doubt, the most fierce angel watching over her tribe.

Survivors include her children, Jeff Trahan and wife, Carey, of Grapeland; Debra Trahan, of Hamshire; Ann Frugia and husband, Dicky, of Winnie; Susan Trahan, of Bountiful, Utah; Lisa Wellons and husband, Jeff Blakeman, of Hamshire; and Colleen Cyrus and husband, Arthur; thirty-one grandchildren; forty-four great-grandchildren; and siblings, Caldon Duhon and wife, Darlene; Faye Young and husband, Bruce; Peggy Leger and husband, David; and Robert Duhon and wife, Phabrice.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Ada and Joseph Duhon; husband, Dickie Phelps; siblings, Farnes Duhon; Mary Hebert; Adolph Duhon; and Roosevelt “T” Duhon; and son-in-law, Jason Wellons.

I’m going to miss Beth a long time. She was good friends with my mother, Shirley Wood (Reddoch) who is now in long term care in a nursing home. Had it not been that I would have been there. Beth was a caring friend to us. I’ll miss her calls.
