Garland F. West

August 30, 1949 - May 13, 2024

Garland F. West, 74, of Beaumont, passed away Monday, May 13th, 2024, at Harbor Hospice. He was born on August 30, 1949, to Wilma Hight West and Ova Lee West in Beaumont.

After graduating from Hardin-Jefferson High School in May 1968, Garland was drafted into the United States Army in October of that year. While serving in Vietnam he achieved the rank of Sergeant before completing his tour.

He was an avid fisherman, hunter, and gardener. He tilled the soil morning till night growing one of the best gardens in the area. He said gardening kept him sane.

Garland served on the YMBL livestock committee, where we made some lifelong friends. He loved working with the kids and animals.

He was the leader of the North China 4-H for several years, helping his children raise and show livestock and attending judging contests.

After more than 30 years with Union Pacific railroad, Garland retired to spend time with friends and family.

He lived life to the fullest. No regrets.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-two years, Charla; sons, Zeke West and his wife, Dana, of Brazoria; and Andy West and his wife, Erica, of Houston; daughter, Wendy Brooks and her husband, Rob, of China; grandchildren, Weston and Waylon Brooks of China, who he loved to brag about to anyone who would listen; and siblings, Richard West of Vietnam; Jannie Lovoi, and her husband Joe, of Rockwall; Judene Jannise of China; and Colleen Dowden of Huffman; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Garland is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Eugene West, Glenn West, and David West; brothers-in-law, Albert Jannise and Burl Dowden; and his cherished mother-in-law, Dorothy Castleberry Kifer.

A gathering of Mr. West’s family and friends will be from 1:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m., Sunday, May 19, 2024, at Broussard’s Major Drive, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. His graveside service will follow at 4:15 p.m., at China Cemetery, 461 Benoit, Beaumont, Texas.
