Genevieve Maggio Catanzaro

August 22, 1926 - March 4, 2023

Genevieve Maggio Catanzaro, 96 years young, passed away on Saturday, March 4, 2023. She was born on August 22, 1926, the second child of Annie Dattalo Maggio and Mike Maggio. She is one of the last or possibly the last surviving member of the South Park High School, Class of 1943.

Gen or “G”, as her family often referred to her, spent her entire working career as office manager for the White House Department Store and Gus Mayer.  She retired in 1994 but continued to work part time for the company. She was an active member of the Beaumont Pilot Club and served as its president; she enjoyed attending their conventions and made many friends along the way. Genevieve is a member of the Golden Triangle Republican Women and attended monthly meetings until recently.  During the time her son Louis was a student at Texas A&M, she was active in the Beaumont Aggie Moms Club.

Genevieve and Louis were married for 41 years prior to his death in 1985. Her home continued to be the gathering place for holidays and other events.  She was the “cook of the family” and none of us attempted to compete with her sand tarts and divinity. While she was always willing to share recipes, somehow results were never quite like hers.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Louis and Reen; grandson, Kyle Catanzaro; great-granddaughter, Kinsey Catanzaro; sisters, Pearl Maggio of the Woodlands and Marie Maggio of Beaumont; sister-in-law, Dorothy Maggio of Kingwood; best friend and confident, Karen Eichler; and a number of cousins and relatives from the Maggio, Dattalo and Catanzaro families.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Louis; sister, Lucille Maggio Ochoa; and most recently brother, Carlos M. Maggio. She was the last surviving member of her husband’s immediate family– The Greatest Generation!

The family wishes to thank the following caregivers for their loving care of Genevieve in her final days:  Lisa Raymond, Renesha Carter, Beverly Richardson, Rhonda Ford, Robin Cunningham and the nurses and staff of Gentiva Hospice Care.

A gathering of Mrs. Catanzaro’s family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., with a Rosary recited at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 7, 2023, at Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 8, 2023, at St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church, 6825 Gladys Avenue, Beaumont. Her interment will follow at Magnolia Cemetery, Beaumont.

Pallbearers will be Kyle Catanzaro, Edward Chisum, Charles Daleo, John Jerry LaBarbera, Phillip LaBarbera, and Stephen Sweeney.

“G” was a loving mom, mother-in-law, grandmother and sister. We mourn her passing and feel blessed she was able to live 96 great years.

Memorial contributions can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis Tennessee, 38105.

Geneveive was a distant cousin of mine but “family” just the same. The entire Maggio family is a great bunch of people, and I know Geneveive’s death is going to require getting used to her not being there physically. She has been the “cornerstone” of your family for a very long time. My deepest and most sincere regrets and prayers to you all.

    Frank and Barbara Panepinto says:

Sonny so sorry for your loss, you had a great mama, I would sign off on her deal anytime, kinda like my mamas. Your mama is the end of a great generation of of the Catanzaro family. Hope you and Rene are well. Sorry we will not be able to make the trip to come for the visitation or the funeral. I have a lot going on with cows and Barbara, she is in the middle of catterack surgery having to put eye drops in her eyes all the time. We will be making a donation to St. Jude in her name, our condolences to y’all in this time of sorrow.

I have known Genevieve more than 50 years. She has been a friend and loyal business associate, both at the White House and Gus Mayer.
I am so glad that I was able to talk to her on Christmas Day, just a little over 2 months ago. Genevieve was a great person.
