Genevieve May Van Oostrom

January 18, 1928 - November 13, 2025

Our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, Genevieve May Van Oostrom, 97, of Nederland passed away Thursday, November 13, 2025.  She was born on January 18, 1928, in Jennings, Louisiana to Philip Arthur Montroy and Mary Louise Miller.

In 1946 she married a Nederland boy and considered herself truly a Texan. She overwhelmingly dedicated herself to raising her children, caring for her family and friends alike.  She was a long-time dedicated member of the St. Charles Alter Society.  Christmas Day was always a very special family tradition at her home.  The Christmas tree would have her special touches on it and the Christmas feast was a wonderful occasion.  Sometimes, a true adventure!  Sundays were known for her famous pot roast with mashed potatoes and gravy which no one has been able to replicate.  She never forgot a family members birthday but somehow, she forgot her own age.  As the kids would get older, she would somehow get younger.  At one point Genevieve and Carolyn were almost the same age until Albert figured out what was going on.  If Genevieve didn’t admit her own age she would miss her Social Security benefits, so she quickly became 65, but she always looked much younger.   She had a soft heart for the stray neighborhood cats and always made sure they felt at home.  She was always 30 minutes early to any occasion; anything less would be considered late.

The family would like to thank all those who have helped with her care for the last few years.  Your compassion and experience helped ease her into 97 years young.

Rest in peace Genevieve, God has you in His keeping; we have you in our hearts.

She is survived by her daughters, Carolyn Van Oostrom and her husband, Bill Reed of Alpharetta, Georgia and Shirley McGuire and her husband, Harold of Nederland; grandchildren, Kurt Van Oostrom and his wife, Patty of Vidor, Lauren Fabela and her husband, Landon of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Matthew Garver and his wife, Mary of Alpharetta, Georgia and Dru Lewis and her husband, James of Grand Rapids, Michigan; great-grandchildren, Margaret Fabela, Grandville Fabela, Luke Garver, Emily Garver, and Genevieve Lewis, and Shepherd Lewis; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Albert William Van Oostrom; daughter, Mary Kay Van Oostrom; and sisters, Josephine Bertrand and Norma Selman.

A Memorial Mass for Mrs. Van Oostrom will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Friday, November 28, 2025, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 211 Hardy Avenue, Nederland.  Her inurnment to follow at Oak Bluff Memorial Park, Port Neches. Her cremation arrangements were handled through Broussard’s Crematorium, Beaumont.

Aunt Gene, was such a Beautiful, Graceful Lady. I know you will miss her so very much. Mothers and Grandmothers are so truly special and i know she will forever reside in your hearts. I will always remember her Rooster/Chicken Collection in the Kitchen and the smell of Jo’s Tea Cakes cooking when she knew Mom and i were coming for a visit.
