Gerald “Jerry” Black

Gerald “Jerry” Black, 66, of Sour Lake, went to be with Jesus Tuesday, October 26, 2021, at Harbor Hospice, Beaumont.  He was born on June 22, 1955, to Mary Jean Shipman Black and Morton Gerald Black, in Beaumont. Jerry was a member of Pipefitter Local #195 for 15 years and was also music director at Grayburg Baptist Church since 1997.

Jerry was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, friend and neighbor. His priorities in life were serving God, loving his family and helping others. He and his wife, Lisa, were married for 40 years. He loved to spend time with his kids and grandkids playing games and pulling pranks. Wherever he went he was always playing music and loved singing. He enjoyed singing with family and friends and picking his guitar. Baseball was a passion, and he was a huge fan of the Astros. He spent many years umpiring everything from Little League Baseball through college level softball. His interests also included WWII and Confederate War history. Many weekends involved antique hunting with his wife as they added to their various collections. He was Pawpaw, Mr. G, Hey Ump, Hey Blue, Coach, Bro. Gerald, Sir Dude. There was no such thing as a stranger. He could and would strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere.

Survivors, include his wife, Lisa Black; son, James Black and his wife, Marilyn; and daughters, Samantha Granato and Lindsey Ard and her husband, Justin, all of Sour Lake; brother, Johnny Black and his wife, Sue, of Houston; grandchildren, Alan Black of Lumberton, Aaron Black of Beaumont, Michael Black, Isabel Granato, Layla Granato, and Alli Granato, all of Sour Lake; and great-grandchild on the way, Braxtynn Black.

A gathering of Mr. Black’s family and friends will begin at 10:00 a.m., with his funeral service to follow at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 30, 2021, at Grayburg Baptist Church, 17480 Roadway, Sour Lake. His interment will follow at Rosedale Cemetery, Sour Lake, under the direction of Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont.
