Glenda Jane Huckaby

July 13, 1937 - May 3, 2023

Glenda Jane Briggs Huckaby, 85, of Tallahassee, Florida, formerly of Beaumont, Texas, met her Savior Jesus Christ on May 3, 2023.

She was born in Graham, Texas in 1937, an only child to Glenn Lowell Briggs and Ruth Jane Roy Briggs. Her early life was spent under the open skies of North Texas where she moved frequently with her parents to follow the work of the Gas Company. In her 9th grade the family transferred to Beaumont, Texas, where they lived permanently.

Glenda graduated from Beaumont High School in 1955. There she joined the choir and developed a lifelong love of music. After graduation, she began her studies to become a Medical Technologist at Lamar State College of Technology.  While she was there, she met the love of her life, Roy Huckaby, a handsome Marine who was going back for his degree.  They married in 1958 in Beaumont. Daughter Lisa was born in 1959, so her studies were put on hold for a while. Glenda graduated in 1962, followed by the birth of son Brent in 1963 and daughter Amy in 1969.

Most of Glenda’s working career was as a Medical Technologist in the Lab at Baptist Hospital in Beaumont. She loved her job and did it well. After retirement, she enjoyed quilting with the North End Baptist Church quilting group, reading, and visiting her grandchildren. She was active at North End for over 50 years as a Sunday School teacher and choir member.  Her best friends that she met there became her “sisters”—Sue Rowe, Carolyn Coleman, and Doris French.  They have done life together for many years.

As Glenda and Roy aged, they made the difficult decision to move from Beaumont to Tallahassee, Florida, in 2020 to live near Lisa. After Roy passed away in 2021, Glenda moved in with Lisa and Todd.  We are thankful that she was never sick or in pain and that she enjoyed the simple life at home.

She will be remembered for her sweet spirit, wisdom, sense of humor, straight stitches, gumbo, and chicken and dumplings. The love she showed to her children and their spouses, and to the grandchildren will never be forgotten. She was especially in love with great-granddaughter Parker Anne Massey.

Glenda was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Roy Huckaby.  She will be greatly missed by her daughter, Lisa Huckaby Anderson and her husband, Todd; son, Brent Huckaby and his wife, Susan; and daughter, Amy Huckaby Graham and her husband, Chris. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy; Nate Graham of Kingwood; Keller Huckaby and his wife, Anna Claire,  of Coppell; Sarah Huckaby Massey and her husband, Nathan, of Burleson; and Taylor Huckaby of Mountain View, California; and her great-grandchild, Parker Anne Massey.

A gathering of Mrs. Huckaby’s family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Thursday, May 18, 2023, at Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. Her funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 19, 2023, at Broussard’s, Beaumont. Her interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Beaumont.

I am so sorry for the loss of your sweet mother . I met her when we were in the 9th grade . We were members of the great choir at Beaumont. High and shared great memories of the trips we made to different college campus singing accompanied by the college orchestra’s . Our choir was amazing . She may have mentioned some our escapades. Slumber parties, football games, shirt tail parades down Calder to the pig stand, just to mention a few things we did together. The class of 55 was a special group . We had so many great reunions . The 60th in Fredericksburg was the last time I saw her . She and. Roy sat at our table and we are sitting next to each other in the picture that was made of the. Beaumont area group . She is now singing in. God’s Angel Choir . She is now reunited with her handsome marine . The precious memories of her will never fade . My prayers are with you .

I had the honor and privledge of working with Glenda at Baptist Lab for several years. I never saw her without a smile and a kind word. She taught me many things not only in the lab but in life as a young mom. She had great advice for me anytime I struggled with raising my children. Glenda will be greatly missed by so many people who crossed her path.
