Herbert Dean Johns

April 4, 1942 - March 29, 2026

Herbert Dean Johns, 83, of Winnie, passed away Sunday, March 29, 2026. He was born April 4, 1942, in Houston to Rosa Lee Falknor Johns and Ruby Lee Johns.

Herbert graduated from Milby High School in 1960 and soon began his career with the United States Postal Service. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1964 to 1968 as a radar repairman. Following his military service, he returned to the Postal Service, where he dedicated many years before retiring as Postmaster in 1992. Never one to stop learning, Herbert pursued a lifelong goal of higher education in his early 50s, earning his teaching degree from Lamar University in 1999. He firmly believed that education could change the world for the better.

He is survived by his son, Charley Johns and wife Shawna of Wai’anae, Hawaii; daughter, Jennifer Salazar and husband Frank of Winnie; grandchildren, Taylor, Logan, Landon, Tanner, Julie, Caitlynn, and John; great-grandchildren, Ethan, Noelle, and Carter; brother, A.C. Lowe and wife Karen of Baytown; and niece, Leandra Lowe.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Glenn Lowe; and his son, David Thomas “Tommy” Johns.

Herbert enjoyed playing the game of “42,” traveling, and bringing laughter to those around him. He never met a stranger and was always ready to lend a hand or share a smile. Above all, he cherished time with his family. His greatest pride was being a father and grandfather, roles he embraced with unwavering devotion and unconditional love.

To his children, he was more than a father—he was a constant source of strength, guidance, and encouragement. He led by example, showing them the value of hard work, kindness, and perseverance. His love was steady and reassuring, something they could always count on no matter where life took them. To his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he was a source of joy, laughter, and wisdom, creating memories that will be treasured for generations.

He never missed an opportunity to say, “I love you” and to remind his family how proud he was of them. The bond he shared with his family was deep and enduring, and the love they have for him is immeasurable. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy will live on in the lives he shaped, the values he instilled, and the love he gave so freely.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105.
