Imre Mozes

Imre Mozes was born on January 1, 1938, in Mosca, a small village in northern Hungary. He left the war-torn country in 1956 during the uprising against the soviets, the Hungarian Revolution, as it’s called.  He spent several years with his adopted American father Willis Byron Eugene Pope and his family, who helped him learn English and helped him in getting a job and driver’s license. In 1961, he was married to Florence Winters, a southeast Texas girl and together raised a daughter and 2 sons.  They lived in Baytown, Texas until the late 70’s where he worked in the grocery store business and had been promoted to manager.  After that time, the family moved to Warren, Texas where the children finished school and he worked road construction until his retirement. His beloved wife, Florence, passed away in September 2011 less than two months before their 50th wedding anniversary.

Imre suffered much during his last few years but spent his final 15 months as a Catholic, going to Mass and receiving Holy Communion a couple of times per month.  In fact, during an acute illness in February 2022, he received the sacraments of Baptism, Confession, First Communion, Confirmation and Anointing of the sick while lying in his hospital bed.  His confirmation saint is Saint Stephen of Hungary. He was also enrolled in the Brown Scapular which he was wearing at the moment of his death.  For those who know him, this was truly a miracle and the greatest gift he could possibly receive.  May God have mercy on him and accept his sufferings as expiation for his sins.

Imre loved to garden, fish and did a little hunting in his younger years.  He taught his children and grandchildren to shoot and fish and mostly he just liked to be outside “doodling around”.  His theory on most things was that if a little was a good thing, then a lot naturally was better.  During the 1990’s, after the communist rule was lifted in Hungary some of us were very fortunate to have been able to travel there with dad to be introduced to our Hungarian family and culture.  We were able to meet our step-grandmother and many other relatives and share in their daily lives and stay in their homes.  We also visited many beautiful churches, museums and even a family wedding.

He is survived by his brother, Zoltan and wife, Anni, of Mosca, Hungary; daughter, Flo Jakobeit and husband, Larry, of Beaumont; sons, Emery Eugene and wife, Michelle, of Baytown and Ronald Edward and wife, Marlene, of Panama City, Panama; grandchildren, Steven Gaudet, Erin Gaudet, Sarah Jakobeit, Samantha Jakobeit, Tiffany Mozes and Ronald Mozes, Jr.; and great-grandchildren, Richard Lyons, Craig Roam, Jozsef Gaudet, Alice Calhoun, Zsofia Gaudet and Lexi Harris.

Imre is preceded in death by his father, Imre Mozes; mother, Bores Mozes; stepmother, Etel; brothers, Zsigmond & Lajos; sisters, Bores Nemeth and Annus Gubo; And his adopted American father, Willis Byron Eugene Pope.

A Rosary will be recited at 10:30 a.m., with a Requiem Mass at 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 19, 2023, at St. Francis de Sales Oratory, 802 South Huntington Street, Sulphur, Louisiana. His interment will be at 2:30 p.m., Friday, May 19, 2023, at Mt. Pisgah Community Cemetery, Mt. Pisgah Road, Woodville.
