Iris May Hughes
Iris May Hughes, 90, of Silsbee, died Saturday, January 18, 2025. She was born on August 16, 1934, in London, England.
“My Name Is Iris”, I was born in England but came to the states in 1955 to visit a friend and never went back. I have two sons, Carl and Neil. I also have two grandsons, Clay and Patrick, and two great-grandchildren. I retired from St. Elizabeth hospital where I worked in the insurance verification office. I enjoyed gardening flowers, especially purple irises. When I was younger, I enjoyed sewing, knitting and crocheting. I would even make clothes for myself and my sons. I liked to play cards like poker and Crazy 8’s. I enjoyed puzzles, crossword and word searches. I enjoyed listening to country music, 60’s pop (Dusty Sprinfield and Englebert Humperdink), and 60’s/70’s rock (Beatles). I liked to walk, and I belonged to the Silsbee Health Club. I enjoyed writing letters and had numerous pen pals across the globe. I liked to play golf and tennis and liked to watch baseball, soccer, and football. During the holidays I enjoyed getting together with my sons and decorating. I made fruit cake every year. Over the years I’ve owned several small dogs. I enjoyed watching classic movies, TV Westerns, and comedy movies. I even have an extensive DVD/VHS tape collection of movies at home. I also collected salt/pepper shakers and tea pots. I liked to cook and bake. I had a barbecue pit at home and enjoyed having small gatherings at my home. I didn’t like large crowds. I owned my own kiln and fired ceramics for a hobby. When my boys were young, we would camp with their grandparents. I enjoyed traveling, but didn’t do it often. I kept a clean house and kept my clothes neat and pressed. I liked to dress elegantly and have my hair done often. I also enjoyed going to the ballet. I often went with my first husband to auto races since he raced cars and later my son did. I liked to fish and paint harder paint by number paintings. I also liked shopping and taking pictures.
