James “Jim” Thompson

August 29, 1939 - January 18, 2026

James “Jim” Thompson, 86, of Lumberton, died Sunday, January 18, 2026, at Christus Southeast Texas-St. Elizabeth, Beaumont. He was born on August 29, 1939, to Ima Hunt Thompson and James Denzle Thompson, Sr., in Indio, California.

Jim grew up in Rosepine, Louisiana, and learned to love outdoor pursuits. His career in insurance sales and service eventually took him to Lake Charles, Louisiana, and to Beaumont, Texas. While raising a family, he continued to enjoy hunting, fishing, camping, and motorcycle riding. His family was always of utmost importance to him, and he was proud to be “Poppy” to them and other close acquaintances.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Connie Duncan Thompson; daughter, Gay Lynn Schaffer and her husband, Dave, of Johnson City; son, Terry R. Thompson and his wife, Michelle, of DeBary, Florida; daughter, Dionna Broussard and her husband, Kenny, of Lumberton; sister, Hazel Loftin and her husband, Bear, of Rosepine, Louisiana; grandchildren, Kelli Koonce and her husband, Douglas, of Lafayette, Louisiana and Koy Broussard, Hadleigh Broussard and her significant other, Zayne Thibodeaux, and Brandt Broussard, all of Lumberton; and great-granddaughter, Abbie Koonce of Lafayette, Louisiana.

He is preceded in death by his sons, Douglas Thompson and James Randall Thompson.

Memorial contributions may be made St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 4090 Delaware Street, Beaumont, Texas 77706.

A funeral service for Mr. Thompson will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 23, 2026, at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 4090 Delaware Street, Beaumont. His interment will follow at R.S. Farmer Memorial Cemetery, Silsbee, under the direction of Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont.
