Jawahar P. Lal
In Loving Memory of Jawahar P. Lal
Jawahar P. Lal, affectionately known as “Baba,” passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at the age of 85. Born on June 23, 1939, in Madurai, India, to Dhanalakshmi Kuduva and Doraisamy Puliadi, Baba’s life was a testament to love, kindness, and unwavering dedication to family and community.
In 1969, Baba married the love of his life, Radha Lal, in their beloved hometown of Madurai. Together, they embarked on a journey that led them to the United States in 1972 and eventually to Beaumont, Texas in 1977. Over the past forty-seven years, Baba played a pivotal role in fostering and nurturing the South Asian community, becoming a cherished elder and father figure to many.
Baba’s greatest joys were found in the simple yet profound pleasures of life—spending time with his family, traveling the world, and sharing quiet moments of laughter. Though he often left the storytelling to others, his gentle humor and warm presence brought smiles to those around him, his spirit forever youthful. Whether as a devoted father, grandfather, or respected elder, his love for children and family knew no bounds.
Over the past 50 years, Baba’s generosity knew no bounds, as he devoted himself to numerous philanthropic causes in both India and the United States. He took immense pride in supporting the development of the Saurashtra Girls’ High School, Saurashtra College, an eye clinic, and a senior home in India, as well as the Meenakshi Temple in Houston, Chinmaya Shritapi Temple, and the Indian Cultural Center of Beaumont. Additionally, he contributed to a variety of local charities, including St. Jude’s, Texas Children’s Hospital, the Make a Wish Foundation, Smile Train, Southeast Texas Food Bank, March of Dimes, American Cancer Center and the American Heart Association. His legacy of community service and compassion will undoubtedly endure for generations to come.
Baba is survived by his devoted wife of fifty-five years, Dr. Radha Lal; his children, Deepa Lal of Plano, Texas, Reka Lal and her partner, Heather Conger, of Oakland, California, and Ashwin Lal and his wife, Rashmee Shah, of Salt Lake City, Utah; and his cherished grandchildren, Kavya and Kiran Conger of Oakland, California, and Niam and Avi Lal of Salt Lake City, Utah. He is also lovingly remembered by his siblings, Prabhawathy, Ram Charan, and Vishnu Priya, along with a vast circle of extended family, friends, and loved ones whose lives he touched over the years.
He is preceded in death by his parents and three siblings, whose memories he carried with him always.
Memorial contributions in Baba’s honor may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 840692, Dallas, Texas 75284.
A gathering to celebrate his life will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, January 26, 2025, at Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. Cremation arrangements are entrusted to Broussard’s Crematorium.
Baba’s kindness, humility, and unwavering love will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him.
