Jed Martin Shelton

June 20, 1971 - August 24, 2021

Jed Martin Shelton, 50, of Beaumont, passed away from complications of Covid-19 on Tuesday, August 24, 2021. He was born June 20, 1971, in Beaumont, to Concetta Brocato Shelton and Lawrence Haskell Shelton Jr. He was a graduate of Central High School, class of 1989, and Lamar University class of 1993.

He was a member of St. Pius Catholic Church in his younger years and presently was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church where he and Margaret were raising their children in the faith that was so important to him.

He was a lifelong law enforcement officer, starting his career in corrections at the Stiles Unit. In 1994, he started with the Texas Department of Public Safety where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant in the Criminal Investigation Division and served the Department faithfully for over 24 years.  He was currently employed by the Beaumont I.S.D. Police Department as a Sergeant. He was very respected and loved by all his brothers and sisters in blue.

He was a member and past president of the Beaumont Chapter of Numismatists, Coin Collectors of America.

Jed was an animal lover and had a tender spot in his heart for his dogs and cats, especially Daphne, his rescued Greyhound.

He was a devoted grandson and took care of both of his grandmothers, Nonnie and Mawmaw. He was very close to his sister, Cindy, who also shares a career in law enforcement.

His greatest joys in life were his loving wife, Margaret, and his girls, Mackenzie and Megan.  He loved spending time with them and traveling all over America.  He was known as the number one cheer dad and never missed an opportunity to see them at cheer competitions or school cheer. In 9 years of competition he only missed one, due to the death of his father.  He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Margaret Shelton of Beaumont; his daughters, Mackenzie and Megan Shelton; his grandmothers, Constance Brocato and Geraldine Shelton, of Beaumont; sister, Cindy Shelton and niece, Daniell of Houston; mother-in-law, Alice DerGarabedian; brother- in-law, Michael Conlin and wife, Bonnie; aunt, Linda and husband, John Galbreath; uncle, Charles Brocato and wife, Sandy, of Beaumont; and numerous cousins and many extended family members and friends.

I only heard of Jed’s passing this afternoon. I knew Jed from elementary school days. Always a very sweet and kind guy. Sending prayers to the family. God bless you.

Oh words fail me. I had NO idea until just this evening that Jed had passed and I am DEEPLY sorry for his family, and Ms. Geri, and for all who’ve known and loved him. What a special man he is, and while reunited with those he loved who went before him, we will see him again one day. God bless this journey for you all.

    Verna Azore says:

My condolences to the Shelton family. I met Jed while working with his mother, Connie Shelton, at Austin M.S. She was my secretary and the best I ever had. She was so proud of both Jed and Cindy. She loved being a proud grandmother to MacKenzie. I just saw his obituary today and could not believe he had passed. My condolences to his wife, daughters and especially to his sister Cindy. May your faith in God give you peace and comfort during this time of bereavement. Mother and son have been reunited in Heaven.

I also do not check my emails frequently as I am struggling to help my wife with her kidney Stage V issues. I just saw the email from Don Cohn informing of Jed’s passing. I was Jed’s Narcotics Captain in McAllen. I truly liked and respected Jed’s cool and professional response in all situations. Sending my prayers for Margaret, Mackenzie and Megan and other family members.

So sad to hear the news. Jed and Cindy were my first friends in the neighborhood in Beaumont. I, being three years younger, always looked up to him as a kid and was always so thankful when he came to my defense when I was being bullied. Climbing trees and exploring the woods behind our houses and messing with all the chickens in the Shelton’s backyard.. I remember his speed. Blinding. I also remember Jed betting my dad, Eldon Koch, five dollars that he could catch a Cardinal by the next day. Sure enough, he did. My prayers are with your family.

    Jed Shelton family & friends,
My condolences are with you all during this heartbreaking time. Jed was a wonderful father and friend, he loved talking about his girls and family. He always made sure that Nonnie had a bite to eat, and spoke highly of his sister. He was my work father at DPS, and taught me far more than was written in the general handbook (mostly what not to do). He will be greatly missed and always loved and remembered.
    Sincerely,
    Kristin Ipes
    Former DPS Counselor

Jed we are going to miss you brother. I rode bikes in the neighborhood with Jed growing up in Beaumont. I remembered he loved to laugh and watched over his little sister as we played. I also played football with Jed in High-school. I am African American (they thought they were fast)I told the football team he was fast too. They did not believe me until Jed beat almost all of the African American receivers and running backs on the team(including me)Hence the nickname (White Chocolate). God Bless You Jed and family.
