Jeri Wynan Johnson Speyrer
Jeri Speyrer passed away Saturday, July 13, 2024, just 3 days after her 85th birthday. Jeri was born July 10, 1939, to Hardy Sidney Johnson and Chloyce Elizabeth Henderson Johnson. Raised in Nederland, Texas, Jeri was a Bulldog through and through.
She graduated from Nederland High School in 1957 ending her 6-year cheerleading career on the field. She then moved from the field to the stands where she continued to cheer on her Bulldogs as well as her Astros, Cowboys, Rockets, any little league team she knew one of the players be it one of her children, grandchildren or friends of a friend. She loved competition as well as dancing and socializing. She was a line dance instructor at Golden Years until her health would not permit her to continue. She met some very dear friends during this time as she traveled with the “Boot Scooters” performing for area nursing homes and workshops in the Houston area. Jeri was the glue for not only our family but friends as well. She gave her all to make everyone comfortable and happy. If you were one of the lucky ones to know Jeri, you know the special person we’ve lost.
Jeri is survived by her sister, Janell Johnson; children, Greg Askew and wife, Julie; Joni Barrow and husband, Ricky; Lindy Goodwin and husband, Mike; and Dana Kahla; grandchildren, Jake Askew and wife, Crystal; John Thomas Askew; Cullen Barrow; Allison DaCosta; Jeremy Barrow; Mandy Fortenberry and husband, Evan; Chris Goodwin; Jason Goodwin and wife, Angie; Mark Goodwin and wife, Mary; Tyler Kahla and wife, Savanna; Kris Kahla; and Quentin Kahla; fifteen great-grandchildren; and special friends, Mary Williamson and Barbara Turner.
Jeri is preceded in death by her parents and husband of 54 years, Gerald Speyrer.
The family would like to thank all the family members and friends who helped us during these last few months with prayers, food and or their time. Special thanks to David Foux, Mike Goodwin, Linda Speyrer, Ricky Barrow and Barbara Turner for their unwavering help and kindness.
Fly High MY Precious Mother. Your absence will be felt for eternity. Please continue to watch over us and guide us as you have for the past 85 years.
Memorial contributions may be made to MD Anderson Cancer Center, P.O. Box 4486, Houston, Texas 77210.

Sincere condolences to the family. I am so very sorry for your loss. May God provide the necessary peace and comfort to your family and friends during this difficult time. Please remember these words of encouragement from the Bible: “Jesus plainly told her: I am the resurrection and the life. He that exercises faith in me, even though he dies, will come to life.” —John 11:20-25.
Prayers going out for Greg, Joni and family. Your mom was a very special person. She was loved by everyone who knew her. She will definitely be missed. I will remember the good times traveling with her and Gerald and being on the Bootscooters dance team. So glad she is no longer suffering.
