Joseph Edward Coco, Jr.
Joseph Edward Coco, Jr., of Austin, Texas, unexpectedly departed this life on Monday, May 8, 2023. He was born on July 1, 1955, in Beaumont, Texas, to the union of Jimmie Lou Redmond Coco and Joseph Edward Coco, Sr., of Beaumont.
Joe was devoted to his family. He took immense pride in his sons and grandsons. He cherished the times he spent hunting with them on the “Dos Hijos Ranch,” kayaking on the Frio River, and fishing on the bays of Port Aransas. He graduated from Forest Park High School in 1973 where he was a significant golfer. Upon graduating from high school, he attended Lamar University School of Business on a golf scholarship and joined the Sigma Nu Fraternity. He was the life of the fraternity parties and earned the nick name the “Italian Stallion.” Apparently, he was the only Italian that did not pledge ATO. In 1977, he graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and went to work for Mobil Oil where both his father and father-in-law were employed.
Joe was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church in both Austin and Corpus Christi, Texas. He worked for Mobil Oil Corporation and Koch Industries. Joe retired in 2006, after 30 years of employment in the Petro Chemical Industry. Joe was active in the Boy Scouts of America and Incarnate Word Academy. Joe was a problem-solver who often took on difficult projects at home, his neighborhood, IWA, and his beloved church. He enjoyed volunteering at the church where he served as an usher and fulfilled any “Mr. Fix It” jobs that Father Tomasz asked of him. He was a spiritual man and was involved in numerous church activities. Joe lived a fulfilling life as a son, brother, husband, uncle, father-in-law, grandfather, son-in-law, and most importantly as a friend to all who welcomed him.
Joe leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 29 years, Margot Ortega-Coco of Austin, Texas; son, Tyler Coco, and his wife, Worley Antil-Coco, of Beaumont; son, Jared Coco of Austin; sister, Sheila Coco; nieces, Alyssa Bottinelli and Katie Bottinelli, all of Anaheim Hills, California; and grandsons, Wyatt Coco and John Oscar Coco. Joe’s devoted Labrador, Molly, will miss their walks at home in Austin, their adventures at the ranch, and their swimming in the Frio River in Leakey, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lauren Coco; his mother, Jimmie Lou Redmond Coco; and his father, Joseph Edward Coco, Sr.
A gathering of Mr. Coco’s family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., with a Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, May 11, 2023, at Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 12, 2023, at St. Anne Catholic Church, 2715 Calder Avenue, Beaumont. His cremation arrangements will be handled through Broussard’s Crematorium, Beaumont.
Interment is not immediately planned. The family will notify loved ones in the future when an interment is scheduled.
The pallbearers will be Chris Coco, Charlie Coco, Rusty Coco, Justin Devillier, Roberto Perez, Dave Koss, John Ishmael, and Gray McCracken. Honorary pallbearers are Andres Baldez, Jr., Jaidan Pena, J-Dun Tripp, Pablo E. Tripp, Andrew Perez, Oliver Bowden, and Anthony Bowden.

My sweet cousin Margot,
Words cannot express the sorrow I felt when I heard the news of Joe’s passing. My heart aches for you, Tyler and Jared. Joe was a wonderful man and he will be missed not only by his family and friends but also by the community he served. I pray that the beautiful memories of your life together will sustain you forever. Please know that you and your entire family are in my thoughts and prayers. “Say not in grief he is no more, but live in thankfulness that he was.”

With our sincere condolences, please know that we will continue to pray for you Jared and Joe. Joe was a blessing to us all. He lived his life to serve as God may have wished him to do so! He contributed a lot of his knowledge and time to Incarnate Word Academy in Corpus Christi. More importantly, he shaped Jared to be the young man he is today. We are forever grateful for you and Joe! We are heartbroken in hearing the passing of an exceptional Husband, Father, and Friend. Joe was always there to help and was a great example to his two sons Tyler and Jarred.

I knew Joe as a customer when he was at FHR in Corpus Christi and as a friend and neighbor. He truly was a Man for all Seasons. Intelligent, humble, polite, well read and a great since of family. I watched Joe and Margo’s son Jared, grow from a child to a
Man. He was so proud of Jared and the life he was living. Margo, Zoe and I are so saddened by Joe’s passing and wish we could be with you and Jared during this time of great sorrow. However, I must say something about one of the comments I read about Joe and his beloved dog…..I know the dog’s story and why You and Joe had her. I’m just happy to hear she and Joe worked out their issues.

I met Joe as freshmen at Lamar, became brothers of Sigma Nu, and have many fond memories of the great times we had. The comments from family, friends, and coworkers are a tribute to a man of true integrity and honor. A life well lived! My prayers and condolences to the family he will be missed.
Margot, l am so deeply saddened to hear about cousin Joey. I always felt a special bond with him, we are the same age and our birthdays are 4 days apart, so he was and always will be in my thoughts. I had the opportunity to work with Joe at Flint Hills Resources in Corpus Christi. He was a man of integrity, a compassionate individual and a true leader. He brought the best out in all who were fortunate enough to work alongside him.
After he retired, I’d bump into him every now and again and he would always say hello and have a kind word to go along with his handshake.

I had the pleasure of pledging Sigma Nu with Joey. He was an outstanding man then. I read his obituary and found out he had a full life with his family and friends and also church family. I haven’t seen him since I left Lamar. I am sadden by his passing and I will pray for him and his family. .
Joe was so special to us in so many ways and we will always cherish our time with him. May her rest in eternal peace. Our love, thoughts and prayers are with Margot, Jared, and all of the Coco family.

My condolences on your loss. Joe was a rare leader and person who made everyone around him better as a result of his leadership, vision and perseverance. I had the pleasure of working with Joe during his tenure at the Koch Corpus Christi refinery where his leadership was key in creating a performance turnaround that is a case study at Koch on how to create value. During my over 40 years in the petrochemical industry, I had the opportunity to work for many good leaders; Joe, however, was among the very best. He will be deeply missed and remembered fondly by many.

I went to work for Joe 27 years ago at what was then Koch Petroleum as part of Koch Industries. One meets, works with and becomes friends with a multitude of people over the years. Few leave the impression on you that Joe did on me. Outside of family and one or two very close friends Joe would be the person I use as a guide to how I treat the people in my life- a great life mentor.

I had the pleasure of playing a lot of golf with Joe in High School. When we attended Lamar, we both pledged Sigma Nu and continued our friendship. Joe was always a guy of high integrity. I am sure he will be missed and treasured by many who knew him as both a family man and professionally. I was sad to hear of your loss. Your family will be in my prayers.

We hung together quite a bit our Lamar freshman year. We competed as golfers in High School, and he was a always friendly to competitors.

I worked with Joe at FHR, and he was an awesome plant manager. I owe my success in the refining industry to Joe for the opportunities he gave me.
