Joseph “Joe” Edward Newton

November 20, 1931 - July 19, 2025

Joe E. Newton, 93, of Winnie, passed peacefully on Saturday, July 19, 2025. He was born on November 20, 1931, in Platter, Oklahoma, to Mamie Viaraenta and Howard Newton.

The town was nothing more than a mercantile store with a post office inside that no longer exists. Joe joined the army at the age of 16 and served 7 years during the entire Korean conflict. He attained the rank of Sargent before leaving the service to attend the University of New Mexico.

After college, he was employed by the Texas Employment Commission. His job descriptions included that of Employment Counselor, Director of a youth employment office and Labor Market Analyst. Joe retired from the State of Texas after more than 30 years of service in 1986. He met his wife Jaynell some years later and they were married in 1999. They were married for 23 years at her death.

Joe loved to shoot craps. He wrote an instructional book on shooting craps, and it was published. One of his favorite bets was to Hop the 7. He and Jaynell had good times traveling around the country to various casinos. If you are in a casino and pass a crap table, think of Joe.

Joe is survived by his stepchildren, Wynette Scott and her husband, Bruce; Nylene Daigle and her husband, David; Elzey Bourque and his fiancé, MJ Hiner.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Jaynell; parents; siblings; and stepson, Jeffrey Bourque.

A gathering for Mr. Newton’s family and friends will begin at 1:00 p.m., with his funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, July 24, 2025, at Broussard’s, 134 West Buccaneer Drive, Winnie. His interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Winnie.

Thank you,
