Joseph M. Scott

May 23, 1927 - January 30, 2025

Joseph M. Scott, 97, of Lumberton, died Thursday, January 30, 2025, at Pelican Bay Assisted Living, Beaumont. He was born on May 23, 1927, in Castlebar, Ireland. In 1955, He married the love of his life in June, and in November, they sailed to the States to make Beaumont their new home.  Mr. Coburn sponsored him, and gave him a job, where he stayed until he retired.  He continued with the company in some fashion until he was 92.

Joseph was a remarkable man in so many ways.  While not highly educated in a formal fashion, he was as educated and well-informed as one could possibly imagine. Possessing an insatiable intellectual curiosity, he was a walking encyclopedia with deep knowledge of his native Ireland, current affairs, world history, music (folk and classical) and several other subjects. One never entered his living space without encountering multiple newspapers (with important passages underlined) and books that had clearly been recently read.  Never lacking an opinion, Joe possessed a wicked sense of humor, and enjoyed long, challenging conversations. His wit and intellect remained sharp as a rapier throughout his long life.

Survivors include his daughters, Mary Taylor and her husband, Robert, of Charleston, South Carolina and Shona Honey of Lumberton; grandchildren, Catherine Honey of Beaumont, Sean Honey of Corpus Christi, and Kiri Taylor, of Charleston, South Carolina; and numerous nieces, nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Joan Scott; son, Kevin Scott; his parents; and all 13 brothers and sisters.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Symphony of Southeast Texas, 4345 Phelan Boulevard No. 105, Beaumont, Texas 77707.

A gathering of Mr. Scott’s family and friends will begin at 11:00 a.m., with his Funeral Mass celebrated at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church, 6825 Gladys Avenue, Beaumont. Joan McHugh Ward says:

Joseph was a 1st cousin of my late Mother, Josephine Deffley, and we had the pleasure of meeting him and Shona in Knock and Castlebar on possibly his last 2 visits to his native town. Our deepest sympathy to you Shona and family on his death. May he rest in peace.

    Mary O’Byrne says:

Like Con, we always loved having uncle Joseph to stay, along with our fun cousin, Kevin. My mum, Phil was the baby of the family, and she often talked about Joseph, Judy and me, the three youngest members of this large, loving family. Although he and Jack were far away, they never felt distant.
Joseph’s gift to all of us is the monthly birthday email which keeps our ever enlarging family in touch with each other.
We will be with you in spirit tomorrow. Xx

    Paddy Bushe says:

Joseph was my godfather, and my favourite relation. Myself and Fíona had the pleasure of welcoming him to our house in Kerry on numerous occasions, as well as accompanying him to Castlebar now and again. He in turn welcomed us to Pansy Drive. Even when his memory began to fail towards the end of his long life, he was cheerful on the phone and curious about the world. Our sympathy to Shona, Mary and their families. Suaimhneas dó.

    Mary Creamer says:

I will surely miss my friend and all the visits and conversatins we had.

    Sandra Moses says:

We had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Scott at Calder Woods while my aunt, Doris Debes, was alive there. He was always so gracious and disliked anyone sitting in her place at the dining table. My fondest memory was he insisted on his fried fish every day and apparently that contributed to his long life.
May he rest in the Lord’s peace,
    Sandra Moses

    Con Bushe says:

    Lilli Phelan Bean says:

Dear Mary and Shona, through these old, old eyes I see you precious children, Kevin, Mary and Shona with your darling mother and father. I loved both your parents and as I read all my Irish books I think of them and interpret the dialogs in your mother’s accent! I’m not kidding! My prayers and so many memories are flying to you and heaven. Love and peace from an old friend. I know Joan has the biggest smile greeting her groom and am sorry for your loss.

    C Keith Hawkes says:

Rest in Peace, Mr Scott. It was a pleasure knowing you.
