Joseph Whitfield Outlaw III

Joseph Whitfield “Whit” Outlaw III, 80, of Beaumont, Texas passed away on Thursday, March 16, 2023. He was born to Eleanor Landes and Joseph Whitfield Outlaw, II in Beaumont, Texas on December 20, 1942.

Whit graduated from Beaumont High school in 1961 and went on to graduate from Lamar University with a Bachelor of Business Administration, where he was also a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. He began his career at Texas U.S. Chemical in Port Arthur, Texas and from there went to work for his family business, Pyramid Concrete Pipe Company. Whit and his brother Danny took over ownership of the company when their father passed away, and then ran the business together until they sold the company in the late 80’s. Whit went on to work as an independent landman until his retirement, which allowed him the flexibility to travel and explore the world. Whit loved a good solid adventure, especially when it involved fishing and being on the water.

Whit also loved good music (Willie and Waylon were staples) and a good party, and he was an avid art collector. He had an affinity for popcorn machines and a good roll of string, particularly given that he was a champion yo-yo player!

Over the course of his life, Whit was very involved with the Beaumont community. He was a Member of the BPM club until it closed its doors, and he also volunteered in countless St. Anne’s cookouts and Halloween carnivals as well as the annual Kaleidoscope festivals held on the grounds of the Beaumont Art Museum and the Art Museum of Southeast Texas.

Whit was a man of few words, which blessed everyone around him that much more when he chose to share a slice of his wisdom or a perfectly timed quip with those in his presence. Aptly nicknamed, Whit was always the most quick-witted person in the room, and he was the king of one-liners. However, it was more so what went unspoken – what Whit did quietly, tirelessly, and most often behind the scenes to look after the well-being of others – that instead spoke volumes of his character. He was the consummate “mother hen” to all, and his love and care for family, friends and strangers alike was steadfast and truly immeasurable. Whit’s net was cast far and wide, and he will be fondly and lovingly remembered by all as a great husband, brother, dad, grandfather, friend and wonderful human being who spent the entirety of his life giving quietly and selflessly to others. May Whit rest in His heavenly peace.

Whit was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dana Carole Stough Outlaw; and brother, Warwick Bell “Bubba” Outlaw.

He is survived by his children, Patrick Outlaw; Michael Outlaw and his wife, Kim; Kate Throop; Malorie Leman and her husband, Thomas; Ryan Gist and his wife, Brittany; grandchildren, Landes and Waylon Outlaw; Carolina, Mally and Lila Leman; and Ellie Throop; brother, Danny Outlaw and his wife, Sherry; niece and nephews, Blake Outlaw, Carter Outlaw, Joey Outlaw, Molly Walter and Whit Outlaw; and his former wife, mother of his children and lifelong friend, Kay Henslee Outlaw Neild.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions for may be made to the Art Museum of Southeast Texas, 500 Main Street, Beaumont, Texas 77701.

A gathering of Mr. Outlaw’s family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 24, 2023, at Broussard’s Mortuary, 2000 McFaddin Avenue, Beaumont. His graveside service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 25, 2023, at Magnolia Cemetery, 2291 Pine Street, Beaumont.
