Kathleen Winslow Nelson
Kathleen Winslow Nelson, born December 3, 1968, in Beaumont, Texas, passed away on May 1, 2026. Kathleen leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, hope, and joy, a legacy defined not only by who she was, but by how she made others feel: seen, valued, encouraged, and deeply loved without condition.
Kathleen was a devoted mother to her three children, Anne, Joseph and his partner Konrad, and David, and a loving wife to her husband, John. She was a cherished daughter to her mother, Anne Winslow, and a joyful sister to Jefferson Winslow and his wife, Erika; Clark Winslow and his wife, Misty; Caroline Heinz; and Thomas Winslow and his wife, Elizabeth. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Jennifer Nelson Marrs, and her husband, Scott.
She was preceded in death by her beloved grandparents, Kathleen and Joe Fisher, and her brother-in-law, David Heinz.
Kathleen was a loyal and steadfast friend to all who had the privilege of knowing her. In every role she held, she was a constant and steady presence, the voice that said “you can” when doubt crept in, and the one who reminded others “you matter” when life felt heavy.
Guided by her belief in lifting others up, Kathleen built a remarkable career as an attorney, dedicating more than thirty years to advocating for those in need of a voice, especially women and children. A graduate of Monsignor Kelly Catholic High School, the University of Texas, and the University of Houston Law Center, she carried her deep sense of justice and compassion into every role she held.
Kathleen served as an Assistant District Attorney in Jefferson, Orange, and Travis Counties, where she focused much of her work on family violence and child abuse cases. In Travis County, she was a prosecutor in the Family Violence and Child Abuse Units, working closely with organizations such as the Center for Child Protection and the Child Advocacy Center to ensure that the most vulnerable were heard, protected, and supported. Earlier in her career, she helped establish a specialized family violence unit in Jefferson County through a Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) grant, creating lasting impact for victims in her community.
She also served as Assistant Disciplinary Counsel for the State Bar of Texas, holding fellow attorneys to the highest ethical standards, and worked in private practice representing local government entities. At one point, she stepped away from the courtroom to invest in young lives as an educator, earning her Texas teaching certification and working in early childhood classrooms. No matter the role, her purpose remained the same: to guide, to protect, and to uplift.
Kathleen’s commitment to others extended far beyond her profession. She gave her time generously through numerous organizations supporting children, families, and those in need, including CASA, children’s advocacy programs, and community outreach initiatives. She was a mentor, a volunteer, and a quiet force for good wherever she went.
Kathleen lived her life rooted in faith and service as a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church and Trinity United Methodist Church in Beaumont. She believed deeply in kindness as a way of life and in the power of hope. She encouraged others to not only overcome life’s challenges, but to thrive beyond them. She had a gift for making even the biggest dreams feel possible and never let anyone feel alone in their journey.
More than her accomplishments, Kathleen’s true legacy lives in the countless lives she touched. She loved deeply and freely, expecting nothing in return except the joy of seeing others shine. She was the kind of person who made you believe, believe in yourself, in others, and in the goodness of the world.
Today, Kathleen is honored not only in remembrance, but in continuation:
—in every act of kindness shared in her spirit,
—in every word of encouragement offered in her name,
—and in every moment, someone chooses to believe in another.
Because that is what Kathleen gave the world. And that is what she leaves behind.
In honoring her life, we remember her words and the way she lived them:
“Choose joy.”

An absolutely delightful human being who lit up every room. Kathleen and the entire Winslow family have been a bright spot in my life for so long. She leaves wonderful children to carry that light forward, and I am certain they will do so.
Anne, almost everyone in our community knew or had an opportunity to know one or more members of your family. Please realize our hearts are breaking for you, Kathleen’s brothers and sister and her sweet family. Kathleen was a beautiful person, a kind soul that spread her love and caring as far as she possibly could. There is no way to count the lives she has touched and the good she has spread, but please take some comfort in knowing she did more in her short life than most ever dream of doing. She will be missed deeply, and forever remembered. May God bless you all and share with you the love and peace Kathleen shared throughout her life.
Always a joy to work with, always had a beautiful smile, rest my friend…

What a great friend she has always been to so many people throughout our lives. She will be missed and remembered always. Many prayers to Anne, her children and her siblings.
I am so very sad to hear of Kathleen’s passing. We were in school together since probably 5th grade, and she was a beacon of light. As someone else with a “W” last name, we were often seated together in “home room” and I adored her. I never heard a harsh word spoken from her, and she was so kind to me during some harder times in youth. What a loss to the world this is. All my love to her wonderful family.
Praying for your family. So very sorry for your loss.
