Margarete James

September 30, 1923 - January 31, 2023

Margarete James, age 99, of Beaumont, Texas, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 31, 2023. Born in Poland on September 30, 1923, she believed that “anything was possible if you wanted it bad enough.”

Margarete obtained her international license to practice cosmetology in Poland in 1943 at the age of 20, but her dream was to come to America. Unable to utter a word of English, and a life savings of $2,000, she hopped on a military plane and arrived on United States soil in 1950. She became a proud United States citizen in December of 1955.

Holding true to her words that “anything is possible”, Margarete went on to obtain a license to practice cosmetology in 3 states: California, Oklahoma, and Texas. She eventually made her permanent home in Beaumont, Texas, where she owned and operated her small salon for more than 4 decades. Always wanting to help people, she often traveled on her days off to do hair on the elderly. She loved her profession and was always there to service the clients in her community.

Margarete was a strong woman with a lust for life. She loved music and dancing. She would try anything once, twice if she liked it. She was a true leader; she was compassionate, loving, and forgiving. She never judged anyone, just always listened. She touched everyone who knew her, and she will be missed.

Survivors include her daughter, Emily Pietz of Lumberton; granddaughters, Carla Morgan of Mauriceville and Christi Harvey of Tomball; four great-grandchildren, Jesse Griffin, Lindsay Myers, Madison Southard, and Malorie Southard; and numerous great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, R.C. James; and daughter, Pamela Crow Morris.

Memorial contributions for Mrs. James may be made to American Heart Association, PO Box 840692 Dallas, Texas 75284 or Dementia Society of America, PO Box 600, Doylestown, Pennsylvania 18901.

A gathering of Mrs. James’ family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Monday, February 6, 2023, at Broussard’s, 2000 McFaddin Avenue, Beaumont. I first met Margarete and RC at the Christmas party at aunt Annie’s in Houston. Many years ago. I remember thinking what a very pretty lady and loved her accent. Not only was she beautiful she lit up the room when they walked in. Such a joyful lady whose life story was so inspiring. So sorry for your loss.
