Martha D. Monk

August 10, 1934 - March 13, 2023

Martha D. Monk, 88, of Beaumont, died Monday, March 13, 2023, at Harbor Hospice, Beaumont. She was born on August 10, 1934, in Moorefield, West Virginia to Sallie Harrison Douglas and Raymond John Douglas. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Martha was a loving and loyal mother. Her humor was infectious, and she was always playing practical jokes with her children. She was a devout Christian and insisted that they had this spirituality in their upbringing. She often reflected that her most precious moments were with her family.

She is remembered by her joyful and beaming smile along with her wacky sense of humor that made a lasting impact on her family, friends, fellow teachers, and students. She was known for always affirming others and her positive energy was an inspiration.

As an Elementary teacher Martha loved all her students as much as she loved teaching them. She was both dedicated to their education, while always holding them all to the highest expectations. Her teaching career spanned more than 40 years in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Kingwood, Texas, and finally retiring from Eugene Fields Elementary in Beaumont, Texas.

Martha is survived by her elder brother, Dr. Neil H. Douglas and his wife, Shirley, along with her 3 children; Sallie Sparks and her husband, Jeff, of Beaumont; Dr. Doug Monk and his wife, Erin, of Kerrville; and Stephen Monk of Baytown; her 5 grandchildren, Jacob Sparks, Kaleb Sparks, Matt Monk, Megan Covalt, and Madison Stone; and her 4 great-grandchildren, Paige, Bennett, Jett, and Birdie.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her loving husband of 45 years, Carl Joseph Monk.

A gathering of Mrs. Monk’s family and friends will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Friday, March 17, 2023, at Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. Her cremation arrangements were overseen through Broussard’s Crematorium, Beaumont.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Southeast Texas Food Bank, 3845 South ML King, Jr. Parkway, Beaumont, Texas 77705 or Nutrition and Services for Seniors (Meals on Wheels), 4590 Concord, Beaumont, Texas 77703.

She was one of the sweetest, most positive people I’ve known. Her support meant so much to me, and to her grandson, Jacob…as well as probably every other person she ever encountered. What a special lady.
