Martha Warren Singer

April 24, 1934 - February 25, 2022

Martha Warren Singer, 87, passed away on February 25, 2022, at home in Beaumont, Texas.  She was born April 24, 1934, in Kansas City, Missouri, as the only child of Margaret R. and Henri L. Warren. She graduated from W.B. Ray High School and received her Associate degree from Del Mar College, Corpus Christi, Texas. She received her bachelor’s degree in Nutrition and Dietetics from Lamar University, Beaumont at the age of 50.

She married her love, Merritt Singer, in June 1953. She raised their four daughters and always put her family first.  She was a Girl Scout volunteer, swimming instructor, and member of the League of Women Voters. She was a lifelong Episcopalian, served as Sunday School teacher, member of the Altar Guild, choir and the Order of the Daughters of the King, and was a graduate of the EFM (Education for Ministry) program.  She was faithful in reading the Bible and devotionals every day.  She worked at WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) where she loved teaching the “mamas” about nutrition.  She was a two-time cancer survivor, shrewd bridge player, chocolate lover, skier, and world-wide traveler.

She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Merritt, and their four daughters:  Judy Burnham (Paul), Beverly Singer, Linda Blumberg (Richard), and Ginny Mendoza (Eddie) and grandchildren: Robert Glenn II (Jessica)¸ Stephanie Burnham (Jordan Bauer), Merritt Burnham, Analia Mendoza and Jonathan Peters.

The family wants to give special thanks to her long-term caregiver Lucy Bensurto Wilson, other loving caregivers, and Harbor Hospice.  Martha is greatly missed by her loving husband, Merritt, family and pet dog Bingo.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 840692, Dallas, Texas 75284-0692; The Humane Society of Southeast Texas, 2050 Spindletop Avenue, Beaumont, Texas 77705; or an organization of your choice.

A gathering of family and friends will be from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., Thursday, March 3, 2022, at Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont, Texas. An additional gathering will begin at 10:00 a.m. with her funeral service to follow at 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 4, 2022, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 680 Calder Avenue, Beaumont. A family graveside service will be held at Houston National Cemetery, at a later date.

    Mom taught me so much. She always looked out for others first, fiercely loved her family, was an inventive and masterful cook (ever tried bologna pea cups!), and lived life to the fullest. Grateful that she died peacefully in her sleep without pain. We miss her so much already.
