Mary Anna Glasgow

Mary Anna Glasgow, 101, passed away peacefully on November 25, 2021, at home in Beaumont. Mary Anna was born October 24, 1920, in Beaumont to Stella McLain Crocket and James Thomas Crocket. A great-great-granddaughter of Parsons Collier and Mary Ellen Collier, she was proud to say that she was a fifth generation Beaumonter.

She was educated at Fletcher Elementary and David Crockett Junior High. However, her three years of high school were at San Marcos Baptist Academy where she began building a lifetime of wonderful memories. In her senior year she was awarded a Sportsmanship Medal, was elected unanimously as Cadet Sponsor of the battalion, was Drum Major, and graduated as Valedictorian of the class of 1938. Following graduation from Lamar Junior College, she moved to Houston to work for an oil company. Realizing that she wanted to make Beaumont her home, she returned to work for Magnolia Petroleum Company.

On October 7,1944, she and Bill Glasgow were married in the Chapel of Altus Air Corps Base, in Altus Oklahoma, where Bill was an instructor. He was assigned for further training to Sebring, Florida, and then Maxwell Field, Alabama. On his discharge from the service, they returned to Beaumont, where they began their family, and Mary Anna went to work in the BISD business office.

On January 1, 1950, Mary Anna joined Bill in operating the family business: Texas Storage Company, Agent for Allied Van Lines. Thirty years later they sold their business. After a few months as a lady of leisure, she returned to the workforce as Office Manager at the Beaumont Country Club. She retired ten years later. After 51 years of marriage, Bill passed away on Thanksgiving Day in 1995.

Soon after going to work with Bill, Mary Anna began volunteering, as a member of the Board of Y.W.C.A. and Treasurer. This was her introduction to many years of service to United Appeal as Treasurer of the Board and chairman of the Budget and Admissions Committee. She also served on the Board of All Saints Episcopal School, and in its early days served as bookkeeper on a volunteer basis.

As a young child, she was baptized at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and attended regularly as long as her health permitted. She served as president of St. Monica’s Guild, president of the Women of St. Marks, and on the Vestry. She was appointed the first woman to serve as Senior Warden in 1974. Also active in the Episcopal Diocese, Mary Anna served on the Board of the Women of the Diocese and the Board of St. James House, Baytown.

In her retirement, she loved traveling with friends and her elder daughter Susan. She also continued her volunteering first, for ten years at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, and then another fifteen years and over 4,000 hours of service for her daughter, Vicki, at Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas. She always thought of others and often made sure friends had a ride or a place to spend the holidays.

Mary Anna is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Bill. She is survived by her daughters, Susan Weaver, Vicki Holcombe and husband, Gary, of Beaumont, grandsons, Brian Weaver and wife, Amy of The Woodlands, Michael Weaver and wife, Merrick of Beaumont, James Holcombe and Matthew Holcombe of Houston, and great-grandchildren, McLain Weaver, Anderson Weaver, and Mackenzie Weaver.

The family would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Earth Angels and the attentive caregiving of Shirley Fentroy, Brenda Leday, Alice Thomas and Sandra Schroeder, as well as her Kindred Hospice nurse, Margo Glass.

A gathering of family and friends will begin at 9:30 a.m., with her funeral service to follow at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 4, 2021, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 680 Calder Avenue, Beaumont, under the direction of Broussard’s, 2000 McFaddin Avenue, Beaumont. The service will also be live streamed from the St. Mark’s Episcopal Church Beaumont Facebook page. Her interment will follow at Magnolia Cemetery, Beaumont.
