Mary Ellen “Monkey” Breaux Weisse

July 10, 1943 - November 10, 2025

Mary Ellen Weisse, 82, of Hamshire, Texas, passed away peacefully on November 10, 2025, surrounded by her family.

Born on July 10, 1943, in Port Arthur, Texas, to Ray and Mary Breaux, Mary Ellen was a true firecracker from the very beginning. Raised in Port Acres, Texas, she attended Stephen F. Austin High School, where she graduated in 1961. It was during her time at SFA that she earned the nickname “Monkey,” affectionately shortened to “Monk,” a name that stayed with her throughout her life. Monk lived life with passion, laughter, and a faith that could move mountains.

On August 25, 1961, Mary Ellen married the love of her life, Jerry Weisse, and together they shared 64 wonderful years of marriage. They built a beautiful life filled with love, laughter, and music — always dancing and singing together at every opportunity. They also enjoyed trips to the casino as well as quiet mornings on their porch, watching the world go by with coffee and cigarettes in hand.

Mary Ellen was the proud mother of three children — Tammy Kaye Weisse, Michael Lloyd Weisse, and Anthony (Tony) Wayne Weisse — each of whom she loved fiercely and unconditionally. Motherhood came naturally to her, and raising her children nurtured an enduring sense of compassion and devotion that extended far beyond her own household. She embraced the role of homemaker and caregiver with grace and unwavering dedication, earning the affectionate nickname “Nanny” from many, as she cared not only for family but for others who became like family to her. Her family was her greatest joy, and she poured her heart into every moment she shared with them

A devoted Catholic, Mary Ellen lived her faith boldly. She never hesitated to pray for others or offer a word of encouragement to anyone in need. Her faith guided her through life’s ups and downs, and her strength and conviction were an inspiration to all who knew her.

Mary Ellen was a pistol of a woman — outspoken, full of energy, and always ready with a quick wit and a hearty laugh. She had a larger-than-life personality and could light up any room she walked into. Her laughter was contagious, her love was fierce, and her presence will be deeply missed.

Mary Ellen was welcomed into Heaven by loved ones who went before her; husband, Jerry Weisse; parents, Ray and Mary Breaux; brothers, Kirk Joseph Breaux and Curtis Breaux; her father and mother-in-law, Ernest and Edna Weisse; brothers-in-law, Ernest Lloyd Weisse and Robert John Diaz; and nephew, Curtis Dewayne Breaux.

She is survived by sisters Lisa (Breaux) Diaz of Groves and Denise (Breaux) LeTulle of Leander; sisters-in-law Pat (Savoy) Breaux of Port Acres, Carmen (Breaux) Grass and her husband Mark of Fannett, and Judy Williams and her husband Hershel of Hamshire.

Children Tammy Kaye Weisse Benson of Hamshire, Michael Lloyd Weisse and wife Julie of Winnie, and Anthony Wayne Weisse (Tony) of Lockhart. Cherished grandmother to Dustin Melanson of Hamshire, Raygin Melanson and wife Malloree of Nederland, Kearston Weisse of Winnie, Wasey Weisse of Winnie, Kylor Weisse and wife Brooks of Hamshire, and Michayla (Weisse) Spurgeon and husband Tyler of Port Neches, Natalie Rose and husband Brandon of Hamshire, Stephen Lagrone and wife Samantha of Atascocita, and Anthony Cortez of Kingwood. Her heart was full with the blessing of her great-grandchildren — Hannah Melanson, Dawson Melanson, Baylor Melanson, Burklee Melanson, Jolie Weisse, Hallie Weisse, Andie Weisse, Madeline Spurgeon, Jacob West, Braylee Rose, Emily Cortez, Anthony Cortez Jr., Terry Lagrone, Morrigan Lagrone, and Andrew Lagrone.

Mary Ellen’s laughter, love, and faith-filled spirit will live on in all who were blessed to know her.

Thank you both so much .
Mom loved her classmates and today as I was going through her many photo albums I came across a little tiny book with photos from a class field trip in 1961 !
I had never seen these pictures of Mom before.
She was so young, so pretty and funny as ever because some of the pictures she was taking inside of a concrete Culvert on the side of a road !
    Made me laugh 🙂 !!
Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.
