Mary Jane Young

March 10, 1947 - September 23, 2024

Mary Jane Young, 77, of Silsbee died Monday, September 23, 2024. God, thankfully, broke the mold after Mary Jane was born to Glover H. Lowrie Sr. and Eula Eva Trawick Lowrie on March 10, 1947, in Sour Lake, TX.

Mary Jane was the 8th of 10 children. This is something you would quickly find out if she were to cook you a meal for 4, because it would easily be able to feed at least 20. Mary Jane’s arrival was always known due to the shouts of, “There she is.” or “Finally!” along with the rustling sounds of a dozen or so Walmart bags full of drinks, candy and items found on the clearance racks.

You could not find a tougher, more stubborn woman. This may be due to having 7 brothers or due to working in customer service. Working for Russ Wilson Grocery in Silsbee and then Walmart in Beaumont made her one of the ladies you hated going to the store with, because everyone knew her and you could not make it up an aisle without getting stopped. Despite being someone to never bite her tongue, she truly had a heart of gold and would give you the shirt off her back.

Mary Jane’s family always came first to her. She only had one child of her own, but always seemed to have a few of her siblings’ kids in tow. Her only child, Chick, was her pride, joy, and the reason for every gray hair Mary had. When he married Paula, Mary Jane immediately became another member of the Ward/Whisenant family as well. Before Chick died from cancer, she promised him she would take care of Paula and their kids, Beth, and Zane. A promise she kept until the end.

Once her grandchildren were grown Mary Jane found a new joy in having great-grandchildren. Blake and Edie were the true shining stars of her life. Blake, lovingly referred to as “that baby,” and Edie were her greatest gifts. As soon as they entered the room everyone else would melt away. The love she had for them was something that could not be touched.

Mary Jane was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Curtis, Calvin, Grover Jr., Glen, Odell, and Melvin Lowrie, sister Shirley Dentler and in laws Nelmer and Linda Whisenant, and James Ward. She was most importantly greeted in Heaven by her son, Chick Young.

Mary Jane leaves behind her grandchildren, Kris Latil, and wife Tara, Beth Slaydon, and husband Tyler, Zane Young, her daughter in law Paula Vaughn, and husband Kirk, her sister Evelyn Chance, and husband Roy, her brother Doug Lowrie, wife Karen, and in law Mary Ward. She also left behind her greatest blessings, her great grandchildren Blake and Edie Slaydon.

The family would like to also extend a huge thank you to Wendy and Amy with Olive Branch Hospice for putting up with ole’ Mary Jane.

Her cremation arrangements were handled through Broussard’s Crematorium, Beaumont, under the direction of Broussard’s, 490 Cemetery Road, Silsbee.

Please remember these words of encouragement from the Bible: “Jesus plainly told her: I am the resurrection and the life. Melissa Chance says:

We love you, Mary! You will be greatly missed.

Mary was a beloved daughter, sister, mother, aunt, grandma & great grandma! I don’t have a ton of pictures of her, but she has been at every family gathering, shower, wedding, reunion, and funeral all the 30 years years I’ve been around the Chance family. It seemed to me that family was the absolute most important thing to her!

She was always busying herself with dishes or organizing the food platters and enjoyed helping with everything she could.

Mary was always on the look out for deals and loved picking things up for the kids over the years. She even bought the girls their cute pink cupcake comforters when we were rebuilding.

    Mona Blake says:

Aunt Mary and Aunt Evelyn took such great care of my brothers and I when we were children. They were so much fun and such a source of love and comfort. We were all so blessed to have such a caring and genuine family. My mother, Shirley Dentler was the biggest loss our family has ever suffered. Aunt Evelyn was right beside us until the end and is still comforting us with her love and grace, just like she did for our beautiful Aunt Mary. Rejoice in heaven for eternity Aunt Mary✝️💜🙏

Mary Jane was a wonderful person. All of us loved her. She was always part of our family, always.
When I was a teenager she would be my chaperone cruising 11th Street in Beaumont. We had some great memories. I always loved her. When I married Larry, he loved her too. She was an exceptional human. The world needs more Mary Jane’s. Love to all the family.
