Mary Jo Cacioppo
Mary Josephine “Jo” Corona Cacioppo lived a loving and giving life of 96 years until her death, Saturday, April 18, 2026, in the good care of Calder Woods.
Mary Jo was the second daughter born in Beaumont, Texas, on August 24, 1929, to Marie Maniscalco Corona and Sam Corona. She was married to her devoted husband in 1951, Jasper Jake Cacioppo, for 49 years until his passing in 2000. Mary Jo and Jasper were blessed with 5 children, Richard Cacioppo, Michael Cacioppo, Mary Ann Cacioppo Renner, twin sister, Marietta Cacioppo, who passed a day after birth and James Cacioppo.
The Cacioppo/Corona families were good friends through St. Joseph Church. Mary Jo wanted to have children and a big family. Thanks to Jasper’s persistence her dream came through. They were married at St. Joseph Church where both had received all their sacraments and attended all their lives.
Within that first year they were blessed with their first child. Jasper worked long hard hours at Cacioppo’s Grocery on Buford Street. Mary Jo was a homemaker, mother, wife and handyman excelling in each roll. She kept a meticulous home and cooked three delicious meals daily which included Sunday pasta/meatballs with garlic fried chicken. No morsel was ever wasted. Mary Jo was selfless, doing without for her family.
She wanted her children to have a better life with 12 years of Catholic education and 4-year Lamar University degrees. She and Jasper instilled a strong work ethic through words and example. Shortly after marriage, Jasper was seriously ill, so she quickly learned to cook low cholesterol meals. She had a radical mastectomy in her 40‘s, but moved forward. In Jasper’s 50’s, he suffered two major heart attacks, so she cooked no salt favorable food.
Mary Jo was known for her after midnight mass Christmas party which included Jasper’s Italian sausage and her pizza. Like both grandmother’s she continued making delicious foods for her expanding family. In later years Jasper & Mary Jo spent many happy days at the family Gilchrist beach house enjoying fishing in Jasper’s boat. Mary Jo took care of Jasper with his heart condition until his death. Half her life was gone, but she did not pity herself.
Mary Jo became very active in helping at St. Joseph Altar‘s. She was a master at making Sicilian cookies and humbly trained others. She was happiest with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. With age, she experienced dementia, but always prayed the Rosary and blessings before meals. Never wanting to be a burden she entered Calder Woods Assisted Living adapting to her new life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jasper; daughter, Marietta; sister, Polly Corona Bertino and her husband, Sam; sister-in-law, Rosalie Cacioppo; parents, Sam and Mary Corona; and Jasper’s parents, Jake and Mary Cacioppo.
Mary Jo is survived by her son, Richard Cacioppo and wife, Gay, of Galveston; son, Mike Cacioppo of Beaumont; daughter, Mary Ann Cacioppo Renner of Winnie; and son, James Cacioppo and wife, Pattie, of Nederland. Her nephew, David Bertino, and niece, Diane Bertino Cupps were like her own children.
Grandchildren include Jenny Cacioppo Acosta (Nelson), Laurie Cacioppo, Wesley Renner (Nicole), Aaron Renner (Chantal), Daniel Renner, Amy Beth Mazzola, Jessica Cacioppo Bergeron (Jonas), Amy Cacioppo Knott (Ryan), Jake Cacioppo (Michele), Tony Cacioppo (Caitlin). Mary Jo is blessed with 17 great grandchildren.
