Mary McKenzie

November 21, 1946 - January 2, 2023

Mary Elizabeth McKenzie, 76, of Nederland passed away, Monday, January 2, 2023 at Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont. She was born November 21, 1946, in Beaumont, to Nell and Thurman Linscomb of Nederland.

Mary was a devoted Christian and learned many scriptures through reading her Bible daily and teaching her children to love Christ through her example. She attended First Baptist Church of Nederland during the early years of her life until her teenage years when she began going to Fellowship Baptist Church on Avenue B in Nederland. She met and married the love of her life, Tim, on July 13, 1968. Together they attended Memorial Baptist Church in Port Arthur. Mary accepted Christ as her personal savior while attending Memorial Baptist Church. After making some lifelong friends, she and Tim moved to Fourth Avenue Baptist Church in Port Arthur where she sang in the choir and began teaching Sunday School. After several years they transitioned to the present location of Fellowship Baptist Church in Nederland. She continued teaching Sunday School in the 2- and 3-year-old classes for many years. During those years at Fellowship, Mary and Tim began working in the Bus Ministry, visiting weekly and picking up kids, teenagers, and adults to bring them to and from church each Sunday. She also began a Library Ministry where she would check out Bibles and books to church members and ordered materials through distributors as well. Her love and knowledge of books made her the perfect person for this ministry. After serving there for many years, she and Tim moved their membership to First Baptist Church in Port Neches for several years, where she continued her love of teaching Sunday School and working in the Church Library.

In her spare time, you could find Mary working on various crafting projects, whether for fun or to give out to someone she loved.

Mary was a devoted and loving wife to Tim and knew and lived by scripture that she was his helpmate. She was an excellent cook and made delicious pies. Her pecan pie was always requested by her son, Chris, every chance he could get one.  She loved sacrificially and cherished her two grandsons.  Mary was willing to do anything for her family and always put their needs before her own.  She may not have ever worked outside the home, but she worked tirelessly, without complaint, to make sure her family was taken care of.

Survivors include her husband, Tim McKenzie; children, Chris McKenzie and Michelle Copeland and husband, Michael; grandchildren, Cameron Copeland and Evan Copeland; sister, Kelli Linscomb; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Leslie Grimes and Melinda Andress.

The family would like to express their appreciation to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont, for the care and compassion she received from the ICU nurses, doctors, surgeons and various medical teams that tended to her needs while under their care.

A gathering of Mrs. McKenzie’s family and friends will begin at 1:00 p.m., Friday, January 6, 2023, at Broussard’s, 505 North 12th Street, Nederland. Her graveside service will follow at 3:00 p.m., at Oak Bluff Memorial Park, Port Neches.

My condolences to Bro. Tim, Chris, Michelle, and family. Mrs. Mary was my kindergarten Sunday school teacher and also brought me to school for many years. She was a very sweet and loving woman. She will be missed!

I remember Mrs. McKenzie shopping in the Christian General Store in Nederland many years ago; in fact Michelle and her brother were young teens. I didn’t know her, just admired the way she shopped. God bless you Michelle and May God comfort you.
