Michael “Mike” Walzel

October 20, 1959 - May 20, 2022

Michael “Mike” Ray Walzel, 62, of Nederland, died Friday, May 20, 2022. He was born on October 20, 1959, in Austin, to Thelma Alice Lee and Delbert Jackson Walzel.

Michael was a strong, charismatic, and kindhearted man and he will be greatly missed by all. Early in life he was raised in Houston, Texas with his siblings.  Mike graduated magna cum laude from the University of Houston in 1987. He worked as a heavy equipment mechanic during that time. He went on to graduate from Baylor Law School in 1990.

He spent twenty-five plus years serving his community with any family, criminal, or probate matters. Mike was a diehard Astros fan and an avid writer. Those who knew Mike well knew that later in life he made the significant life change to become a vegan. He had a fierce love for anything living. His solution to any problem was “Eat plants.” Mike was and always will be a beloved neighbor, friend, brother, and father. He lives on through his loved ones. His memory will live on forever.

Survivors include his children, Julia Guy and her husband, James, of Lumberton; Savanna Walzel and her mother, Megan Kucera, both of Beaumont; Melissa Celeste and her husband, Gabriel, of Dallas; and Bethany Hassell-Hall and her husband, Ty, of Waco; grandchildren, Clayton Guy, Laura Charlotte, Anna Celeste, and Hailey, Rob, and Katy Hassell; siblings, Jack Walzel and his wife, Shevawn, of Round Rock; Jetta Walzel and her husband, Larry Ledet, of Houston; and Margie Aronowitz and her husband, Mark, of League City.  Mike is preceded in death by his parents.

A gathering of Mike’s family and friends will begin at 1:00 p.m. with a celebration of his life to follow at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 28, 2022, at Broussard’s, 490 Cemetery Road, Silsbee. His interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Beaumont.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Sweetpups Rescue and Sanctuary, 1065 Evangeline Lane, Vidor, Texas 77662.

    I was truly saddened to hear of Mike’s passing. My memories of our childhood looking up to Mike as one of our oldest cousins will always be treasured. He loved to play tricks! My thoughts and prayers will be with the family.
