Michael Scott Townsend
Scott Townsend, better known as dad to his children Taylor, Hannah, and Bryce, and BEST known as Pawpaw Scott to his princess Taelyn and his little buddy Cash, unexpectedly passed away on Thursday, December 28, 2023. He was 53 years old of Lumberton,
As kids growing up, Scott and his brother Wayne, played every sport together, basketball, football, and baseball. Their mother Clara and their granny never missed a game as they loved to watch them play. Scott always pushed himself in sports, even as a kid. His brother Wayne was amazed as he watched his eleven year old brother hit the weight room and all he could say is “Wow”!
Scott worked for decades in the construction/petrochemical industry, both local and nationally, even though his kids say his calling was to be a Sports Analyst. He knew everything inside a refinery and how it worked. Scott could run a three hundred man crew, plan the job and QC the job. There wasn’t anything that he couldn’t do. He never missed a day of work, sick or not and was never late! He was known as hardworking and a man of his word. At times, his job would require that he had to be on the road for extended periods of time. Scott would drive long distances on a short turn around just to be with his kids and grandkids, even if it was just for a day.
Scott guided his kids through sports with a particular interest in baseball and football. He not only coached little league but, in the summertime, he would often set up an obstacle course in the front yard and run the kids through drills. Other parents would drop their kids off for a few hours while “coach” ran them through boot camp. This was not part of little league, this was to keep the kids occupied and in shape but more importantly, sneaking in that quality time with his kids and to teach them the significance of hard work. Of course, all of the coaching and drills turned into baseball games, football games and cheerleading! Many miles were traveled to and from the games whether they were local or all the way to Cooperstown!
Scott scheduled beachside summer trips with his kids and their significant others each year in Florida. It was always their favorite trip together, all piled into one house, laughing, eating, making those famous boudin balls, dancing, singing, and enjoying all of the happiness and love. Family was the most important thing to Scott and to be able to bring them together brought him so much joy!
Scott’s most cherished gift on this earth were his two grandkids, Cash Monroe and Taelyn Rose. His life completely changed when they came into this world. He loved talking about Cash’s future baseball and football career. Taelyn melted his heart every time they were together, especially when she called him “Grandma Scott”. They were the apple of his eye and he never let anyone forget it.
Left to cherish his memory are his mother, Clara Townsend of Kountze; children, Taylor Townsend and his wife, Brooke; Hannah Townsend and her fiancé, Colt Clemons; and Bryce Townsend and his fiancé, Katie Holmes, all of Lumberton; grandchildren, Taelyn Townsend, Cash Clemons, and soon to be Baylor Townsend; brother, Wayne Townsend and his wife, Christina; and niece, Elizabeth Townsend, all of Sour Lake. He is preceded in death by his father, Wayne Townsend, Sr.
A gathering of Scott’s family and friends will be 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Thursday, January 4, 2024, at Broussard’s, 2000 McFaddin Avenue, Beaumont. His funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 5, 2024, at Broussard’s, with his interment to follow at Pine Ridge Cemetery, Sour Lake.
