Mike McDaniel
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Mike McDaniel, affectionately known as “Big Mac” and “Pop”, went to be with the Lord on June 13, 2025, at the age of 71. Mike was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, uncle, and friend whose larger-than-life presence will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
Born in Center, Texas Mike’s family moved to Winnie when he was in elementary school where he later became a standout athlete at East Chambers Independent School District, earning a full athletic scholarship to Stephen F. Austin State University. In college Mike was a four-year starter on the football team serving as the defensive captain for two years and receiving the Dick Wright Memorial Sportsmanship Award his senior year. He was also a proud founding member of the Sigma Chi fraternity at SFA—where he forged lifelong friendships he carried with him throughout his life.
It was in Nacogdoches, during his college years, that Mike met the love of his life—Joy. From the moment they met, he was completely devoted to her. Their love story was one of those rare, once-in-a-lifetime kinds—the kind you see in the movies or dream about as a child. After settling in Winnie, Texas, Mike and Joy spent every day of their life together honoring, protecting, and adoring each other. He gave her everything he could, always putting her needs above his own. He never let her feet touch the ground and never let her want for anything. Their marriage was a shining example of deep love, unwavering commitment, and true partnership—one that inspired everyone who witnessed it.
After earning his Bachelor of Business Administration from Stephen F. Austin State University, Mike began his career as a mud engineer in the oil field. In time, he transitioned his career, establishing a successful insurance agency. It was during this chapter of life that he and his beloved wife, Joy, embraced their shared passion for travel, exploring the world together and creating memories that would last a lifetime.
His greatest fulfillment came from being a father to his two sons whom he not only raised with unwavering love but also coached with passion and pride. From early mornings on the golf course to late nights under the stadium lights, he was their mentor, biggest fan, and steady source of encouragement. He was a living example of what it meant to be a remarkable father and a devoted husband—his love for his family was steady, visible, and deeply felt in everything he did. He was the rock of the McDaniel family and always just a phone call away. Whether it was fixing something around the house or offering a listening ear, Mike showed up—tools in hand and heart wide open.
Mike never met a stranger and was always the life of the party. With his big voice, warm smile, and generous heart, he made everyone feel like they were the most important person in the world. Whether you needed a friend, advice, or a reality check, Mike was exactly what you needed—always ready to help, never one to say no.
When Mike became a grandfather, he proudly took on the name “Pop,” and with it came one of the greatest joys of his life. From the moment his granddaughters were born, they had him completely wrapped around their little fingers—and he wouldn’t have had it any other way. He cheered them on at every game, recital, or ceremony, and celebrated even the smallest accomplishments like they were the biggest victories. To his granddaughters, he was more than just Pop—he was a superhero, a storyteller, a dance partner, and a constant cheerleader.
Mike is survived by his loving wife, Joy; children, Charlie McDaniel and wife, Chelsea, and Scotty McDaniel and wife, Holly; sister, Jeannie Hightower; brother, Gary McDaniel and wife, Tomi; granddaughters, Gracie, Kate, Ella, and Charlotte; extended family members, and countless friends who became family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Pete and Ella McDaniel; sister, Barbara Hilton; and nephew, Gerald Hightower II.
Mike’s legacy lives on in the laughter he sparked, the love he gave so freely, and the lives he touched. He was truly one of a kind, and though our hearts are broken, we find comfort knowing he’s now home—and probably already fixing something.
