Milton Dale Magee

May 19, 1935 - July 25, 2023

Milton Dale Magee, native of Beaumont, passed away surrounded by loved ones on Tuesday, July 25, 2023. Those who knew him, loved him. Milton lived a storied life and his Irish heritage bestowed upon him a gift for storytelling. It was always an honor and pleasure to sit with him, listening to his hilarious and inspiring tales spanning his lifetime. He was a proud graduate of South Park High School (Go Greenies!) and attended Lamar University as a member of the Lamar cheerleading squad. He later joined the Navy where he served on the USS Oriskany during the Korean War. He went on to work for and retire from the Mobil Oil Magnolia Plant. Soon after retirement, he started a local sign company known to many, NEMA Enterprises. However, most will remember him as the CEO of Poppas Hook, a BBQ tool manufacturing and distribution company founded by his father Dewey (Pop) Magee, a man to whom he was always quick to give respectful recognition. It is through his work with Poppa’s Hook that Milton’s spirit truly shined. He and his loving wife, Nedra, sold Poppa’s Hooks across the south and beyond as well as gave them away as gifts to countless friends and acquaintances, always proudly spreading the word about Pop’s legacy. “If a job is worth doing, it’s worth doing right”, and “Everybody needs something worthwhile to do”, are the credos Pop lived by, Milton lived by, and the credos he carried forward through his words and actions.

Milton is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Dewey, Walter, Harlin, Charles Henry; and sons, Mark and Sam Magee, Michael Hemmings; and granddaughter, Amanda Casey Duvall.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Nedra; children; Vicki Pruit; Donna Magee; Lorrie Duvall (Ken); Monnica Bruno (William); Phillip Hemmings (Lisa); Andrew Hemmings (Lisa); grandchildren, Gretchen Courting (Jason); Kaelee Fallin (Caleb); Chance Magee (Lily); Gentry Magee; Erin Frederick (Justin); Meagan Gear; Reagan Blackmon (John); Jeremy Hemmings (Marcy); Jacob Hemmings; Kendall Duvall (Lindsey); Nick Bruno (Shelby); Dylan Bruno (Peyton); Avery Hemmings (Joel); Drew Hemmings; and Grace Hemmings; ten great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions for Mr. Magee may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105; Salvation Army USA, 615 Slaters Lane, Alexandria, Virginia 22314; or Wounded Warrior Project, 2200 Space Park Drive, Houston, Texas 77058.

A gathering of Mr. Magee’s family and friends will begin at 10:00 a.m., with a Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 28, 2023, at St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica, 700 Jefferson Street, Beaumont, under the direction of Broussard’s, 2000 McFaddin Avenue, Beaumont, with a reception to follow in the Parish Hall. I’m so sorry that you have lost the love of your life. Although I never met him, Milton had to be a prize to have snagged you. I remember us talking about our good fortune, finding our perfect mates late in life. The good Lord knew what we needed and placed ‘him’ in our paths at just the right time. Forty-one years is just not long enough. But it’s not over, “the best is yet to come”. He’s waiting for you and maybe I’ll get to meet him then. Love you and praying for your comfort. Cleo.

    Mary Jane Mouton says:

    Harlin Magee says:

There is a song lyric that says, “to know him is to love him”. People did not have to know Milton very well to love him; so, I think that many will agree that this lyric applies to Milton. Uncle Milton was a friend to me from my teenage years until his graduation to heaven and I believe I now have another friend in high places. There are beliefs about the afterlife that include many levels of heaven and purgatory. I believe Milton earned a mansion in Jesus’s neighborhood. I hope to visit his mansion soon in spirit, while I still live in this body and to join him in paradise as soon as God wills it.
May his dear wife, Nedra, find comfort in the certainty that a great reunion with the Lord, the Saints and our loved ones is assured.

My great uncle Milton always meant a great deal to me and I wish I could’ve been there today with everyone.

One of my favorite sayings of all time is something he once said to me and almost everyone I know has heard me say it.

“If you want to get something done, start”.

Thank you for everything Milton. I will miss you.

    Walter L Magee Jr says:

He was always there for me when I needed him. Sometimes he even knew I needed him when I didn’t. The man could spin a tale and he spun my mind many times. I haven’t lost him. He’s with me every step I take.

I’ve known Milton, (a.k.a., Mr. Maggie) almost my entire life. He was one of my parents BFF’s. The kind of friend you didn’t have to call before you stopped by for coffee. And the stories they would tell. I remember, listening to the stories around the kitchen table like it was yesterday. God granted me the privilege of saying goodbye just before he called Milton home and I am so grateful. You are a wonderful person and a great friend. You will be missed. And tell Sambo and Mom and Dad I said hi and we Love them.

My friendship with Milton goes back to South Park High School. I remember us “street dancing” in Austin when South Park basketball played/won the state championship in 1953. Years passed and our daughters became best friends. Milton was full of fun and laughter and a life-long friend who will be missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to Vickie and the family.

    Jill (Stinson) Hendrix says:

Some of my happiest childhood memories are being around this crazy, wonderful man on a regular basis! Pearl beer, keg cold in the shop fridge…we didn’t DARE! Vicki, my heart and love is with you and all the family. Also, Vicki, I’ve looked to get ahold of you and can’t seem to find you. Please, when you can, call me 972-352-7659.

    Nan & John Nelson says:

Ol’Milton Magee: there will never be another like him. Kind, compassionate and comforting, weaver of yarns so hilarious there was constant, imminent danger of peeing your pants. For more decades than we can tally, Milton and John aka “Two Old Dudes”
manufactured Vinyl Caps, tank gauge boards,
Papa’s Hooks and Jar Genies, driving to the cedar sawmill in Rusk, Texas for supplies and manufacturing and selling In chemical plants
Of Southeast Texas. With his lovely bride Nedra, Milton played matchmaker for the two of us, and we therefore named our firstborn
(Dalmatian) Milton in his honor. We will greatly miss listening to his stories and I will remember his warm “Nannie-Poo” greeting with a bittersweet twinge.
