Ofelia Martinez Cook

February 19, 1927 - September 12, 2020

Ofelia Martinez Cook, 93, died Saturday, September 12, 2020, in Beaumont. She was born on February 19, 1927, to Consuelo and Porfirio Martinez, Sr., in Houston.

As a child, Ofelia grew up in Beaumont. She was gifted 1st soprano singing in the Beaumont High School choir, in church choirs, and for weddings. She was an avid swimmer and as a young person she participated in sports. She graduated from Beaumont High School in 1944 and subsequently attended Chenier Business College and became an excellent secretary and typist. Ofelia was a great cook and very generous person. 

Ofelia is survived by her brother, Porfirio Martinez; sister, Terry Gonzales; sons, George Hernandez and Claude Hernandez; daughters, Ofelia “Cookie” Struck and Claudia Kelly; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Consuelo and Porfirio Martinez, Sr.; husband and father of her children, Frank G. Hernandez; sons, Frank M. Hernandez, Leonard Hernandez, and Joe Hernandez; brothers, Claude Martinez and Joe Martinez; sisters, Connie Gonzales, Fay Valdez, Hope Tejada, and Delores “Lola” Hernandez. Ofelia was also preceded in death by her second husband, Wade Cook.

Ofelia loved her family. The family appreciates the care given to her in her later years by her daughter, Ofelia Struck and her granddaughter, Bonnie Gomez. 

A gathering of Mrs. Cook’s family and friends will begin at 9:00 a.m., with her memorial service to follow at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, September 17, 2020, at Broussard’s, 2000 McFaddin Avenue, Beaumont. Cremation arrangements were handled through Broussard’s Crematrium.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catholic Charities of Southeast Texas, 2780 Eastex Freeway, Beaumont, Texas 77703.
