Patsy Hughes

October 14, 1936 - August 31, 2022

Patsy Griffin Hughes, 85, of Spring, died August 31, 2022, at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center. She was born October 14, 1936, to Georgia and TM Griffin.

Patsy led an exemplary life and was an inspiration to many. She took great pride in always doing any job to the best of her ability and was never afraid to accept new challenges.

Teaching and leading was always central in Patsy’s life, even outside of the classroom. She began teaching twirling as a young teen and was drum major in high school and Kilgore College. Patsy shared her faith with others by teaching and leading in the churches where she worshipped. Over the years she taught Sunday School, worked with church outreach, taught Vacation Bible School, and more. Her grandchildren fondly remember how she taught them all to ride a bike!

While it has been said that Patsy walked to the beat of her own drum, it could be added that she also walked steadfastly to that beat, never wavering in her commitments to herself, her family, or others. She faced challenges head on knowing God would provide the solutions. She survived Hurricane Harvey and Tropical Storm Imelda, bladder and breast cancer, and other personal challenges. Patsy had the strength and faith to “Let Go and Let God.”

Survivors include her children, John Hughes and Kimberly Barahona, both of Spring; grandchildren, Alexandria Hughes of Beaumont; Lexis Hughes of Houston; Daniela Barahona of Houston; Jose Barahona of Spring; Gabriela Barahona of Houston; and Michael Tolch of Houston; siblings, Joyce Smith of Tyler; Peggy Wininger of Plano; and James Griffin of Fort Worth.

She is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Don Griffin.

A gathering of Mrs. Hughes’ family and friends will begin at 1:00 p.m., with her funeral service at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, September 8, 2022, at Broussard’s, 134 West Buccaneer Drive, Winnie. Her graveside service will be 2:00 p.m., Friday, September 9, 2022, at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Shelby County, 1440 County Road 1470, Timpson, Texas 75975.
