Penny Smith
Lou Ann “Penny” Smith, 87, of Winnie, died Monday, February 20, 2023, at her home surrounded by her loved ones. She was born November 3, 1935, in Beaumont, to Ethel Mary Hayes and Carl Doyle.
Penny was a career nurse, working in the Winnie Community Hospital for over forty years, caring for our community with skill and a rare kindness many still remember.
In addition, she raised a family of seven children, and worked at various profitable hobbies. She could be seen at the Texas Rice Festival with her crafts for sale for many years before deciding to just enjoy the activities and her grandchildren. She loved the Dallas Cowboys and could be transformed into a one-woman cheerleader to which no one dared oppose.
She is survived by her children, Melissa Devillier and husband, Cully of Winnie; Donna Sage of Nashville, Arkansas; Kelly McNeely and husband, Dale of Kountze; Karla Carr of Winnie; David Smith and Betty of Winnie; Toby Smith and wife, Misti of Winnie; and Danny Smith of Winnie; sister, Patsy Bobo of Sour Lake; eighteen grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and thirteen nieces and nephews.
Penny is preceded in death by her husband, Marvin; parents, Ethel Waltmon and Carl Doyle; grandons, Ross VanNorstrand II; Lanny McBride, Jr.; David Johnson; and Danny Thomas Steele; nephew, Shahn Waltmon; and sister, Linda Waltmon.
A gathering of Mrs. Smith’s family and friends will 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., with a Rosary recited at 5:30 p.m., Friday, February 24, 2023, at Broussard’s, 134 West Buccaneer Drive, Winnie. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 25, 2023, at St. Louis Catholic Church, 315 Buccaneer Drive, Winnie, with her interment to follow at Fairview Cemetery, Winnie.

Penny and I started school together in 1941 remanded friends until her death. She was a tiny little red head always smiling and enjoying life. She never ceased to amaze with her accomplishments. An angel on earth has now claimed her place in Heaven. She will be missed. Rest In Peace sweet friend.
