Rev. John Alexander
John K. Alexander, 95, died Friday, January 30, 2026. He was born in Houston in 1930, the eldest of three children, raised in Tyler and Corpus Christi. As a child he was considered sickly with concern about whether he would reach adulthood. However, his 95 years were filled with travel and strenuous outdoor activities, often thought much younger than his chronological age, and wondering why so many contemporaries weren’t living nearly as long as he.
He met his wife Eleanor in college, as both sang in the Acapella Choir of Austin College. They married in 1955. They had four children. John loved and taught his children to share learning, reading widely, and relishing a large vocabulary. He loved public speaking, and as a Presbyterian minister, he found many preaching opportunities in 70 years of service to congregations. John earned a bachelor’s degree from Austin College, Sherman, Texas, a graduate degree from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Austin, Texas, and was ordained as a Minister of the Word in 1955.
He served Presbyterian congregations in Crystal City, Liberty, Corpus Christi, Midland, La Porte and Rosenberg, all in Texas. He was still finding new books to read on theological developments into his 90’s and preaching/teaching/moderating at churches until just a few months before his death.
John loved the outdoors. He maintained trails and buildings on family-owned forested property for 7 decades. He led his family on extensive and numerous trips throughout the Western U.S., including backpacking in the Rockies, Sierra Nevada and Cascade ranges.
Survivors include brother, James and his wife, Jean; children, Paul, Jean, Bruce and his wife, Anna; grandchildren, Judah, Joshua; and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his baby daughter, Elaine; parents, Joe and Virginia; wife, Eleanor; brother, Ralph; baby granddaughter, Elaine; son-in-law, Joe; daughters-in-law, Valeri and Connie.

I really enjoyed my conversations with Reverend Alexander. Such a kind, knowledgeable, wise man.
Rest in peace my friend,
Rev. John Alexander was a great pastor and person, truly a faithful servant. He was kind and giving. I am grateful for his blessing to St. James Presbyterian in La Porte, Tx and to our family over the years.
I loved every conversation with John, especially after worship at Calder Baptist, where he was a not infrequent guest. Such a bright soul, full of curiosity and grace. I shall miss him and regret I cannot attend his memorial service. Prayers for his family. Jim
