Roberta Ellen Snell St. Romain
Roberta Ellen Snell St. Romain, age 89, died peacefully at her home on October 21, 2024.
She was born in Port Arthur, Texas, to Peggy and Frank Snell, Sr. on August 31, 1935. Following her graduation from Thomas Jefferson High School, she began her nursing studies under the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word at St. Mary’s Hospital in Port Arthur. Under the direction of the sisters, Roberta grew in her faith and converted to Catholicism. She continued her nursing studies in Galveston where the sisters introduced her to “a nice Catholic boy”, then medical student Chester St. Romain, Jr. He was the love of her life, and they were soon married. Following Chester’s service in the Army, they settled in Nederland, Texas to raise their growing family.
Roberta was tremendously committed to both her faith, family and community. As a devoted wife and mother, you would always find her and Chester at the Nederland High School football games supporting their daughters’ various extra-curricular activities. She found great joy in listening to the Bulldog football games which she continued to do until her final days.
Roberta found such joy in her marriage and the endless adventures with the girls, sharing the beach house at Rollover Pass with her parents, summer vacations at Peaceful Valley with her aunts and cousins, and the travel her and Chester enjoyed after his retirement.
Roberta was forever grateful for her Catholic faith and remained an active dedicated member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church for over 65 years. She served in many roles as a Lector, Eucharistic Minister, RCIA team member, confirmation and retreat team member. As a convert, she was especially passionate about teaching Catholicism and loved her time teaching at Bishop Byrn High School and her involvement with RCIA program helping to bring others into the church. She loved gardening, her birds and reading.
Roberta’s legacy lives on through her six daughters, Debora Ellen Ferguson of Nederland, Diane Shofner (Walter) of Wimberley, Donna Trevino of Laredo, Mary Foster (Chuck Lewis) of Port Lavaca, Martha Avery (Jim) of Sunrise Beach, and Monica Chester (Bryan Sharp) of San Antonio; eight grandchildren, Rebecca Vandever, Andrew Ferguson, Daniel Shofner (Julia), Kat Shofner, Gio Trevino (Jacquelyn), Elisa Hoyle (Sean), Serena O Foster, and Catie Foster (Matthew Rojas); five great-grandchildren, Cameron and Coen Vandever, Ameila Trevino, Tony, and Luna St. Romain Rojas; brother, Frank Snell (Patsy Heard) of Port Neches; and niece, Jennie Moreland (Cedric DuPont) of Austin.
A Rosary for Mrs. St. Romain will be recited at 5:00 p.m., with a gathering of her family and friends following until 8:00 p.m., at Broussard’s, 505 North 12th Street, Nederland. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 25, 2024, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 130 Hardy Avenue, Nederland, with Reverend John Hughes officiating. Her interment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Groves.
Serving as pallbearers are Frank Snell, Jaime Chambliss, Michael Perryman, Walter Shofner, Chuck Lewis, Jim Avery, Bryan Sharp, Andrew Ferguson, Daniel Shofner, Gio Trevino and Troy Lawson. Her Honorary Pallbearers will be Raymond Rice and Jim Kline.
Memorial contributions may be made in Mrs. St. Romain’s memory to St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church 130 Hardy Avenue, Nederland, Texas 77627.
The family would like to express heartfelt thanks for the care of dear neighbors and friends and caregivers: Stephanie Samuel, Buelah Durand, Ella Thomas and Sherry Verrett.

Debby, Andrew, and Rebecca, I am just now seeing this. I am so sorry for the loss of your mother and grandmother. I know you will miss her. Prayers for you and sending my love.
Donna & Sisters, I am so sorry to hear about your mom passing away. I didn’t live in Nederland and didn’t find out about her passing until the day after her service. I am so sorry to have missed her service. Your Mom always made me feel so welcome in your home. You know I had a soft spot for ur Dad, as he was my doctor for many years. What a great family you all were so lucky to have. I will try to call you soon. I am owner of a Trophy Whitetail Deer Farm now and stay busy taking care of them. Love & Miss You all, I’m sure ur Mom& Dad are quite happy to be together again. My Mom and Dad passed within 3 months of one another and my husband 4 weeks later. Maybe I could come visit you soon. Sincerely Kathy Tinsley Gray
