Rosa Guerra

April 20, 1939 - January 4, 2023

Rosa Marie Guerra passed away on Jan 4, 2023, at the age of 83, at home surrounded by her family and loved ones. Rosa was born in Port Arthur, TX, to Anastacio and Hermelinda Avilez on April 20, 1939.

Rosa was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Socorro Gonzalez, Delia Marcantel, her brother Robert Avilez and infant brother Rudolph. She is survived by her sons Carlos and wife Karron Guerra, Michael and wife Sonya Guerra, grandchildren Brandon & wife Kristi Luke, Kiersten & husband Mike Juchniewicz, Aleksandra Guerra, Hayden Guerra, Cole Miller, Kadon Miller, Caysen Guerra, Alek Miller, Christian Guerra, Graclyn Dean, great-granddaughters Avery and Arden Luke, and sister, Yolanda Fischer.

As a young woman, Rosa worked at Heights drugstore where she earned enough money to purchase her first car. A young man who frequently came into the store always asked to speak to her. When she saw him coming in, shy Rosa would go hide in the back of the store. One day her fellow employees convinced Jaime to buy a giant box of chocolates displayed in the window and give it to Rosa. She finally agreed to go out with him and on Nov 11, 1962, she married the love of her life, Jaime Guerra. Jaime and Rosa were blessed with two sons, whom she dearly loved and taught the importance of love, kindness, generosity and family values. Carlos & Michael were the center of her world.

Later in life she had a career working at Gibson’s Discount Center, where she worked her way up to become a manager. During her career, she mentored many young men and women, and instilled the value of hard work and other valuable life lessons. Rosa was a compassionate and patient person who over the years often provided calming advice to many of her coworkers, friends, family, children and grandchildren. We will cherish these lessons and hope we can carry on her legacy in the same way she lived her life.

Family was very important and Rosa loved to spend time with her siblings, nieces and nephews. She loved cooking and making her famous lemon merengue pies, which everyone looked forward to during the holidays. She enjoyed fishing with her family on the weekends and always caught the most fish.

She was an amazing Christian woman whose love was felt by everyone she encountered. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and loved ones, especially her grandkids.

Mom/Rosa/Aunt Rosie/Mrs. Jaime/Maw Maw, you will always remain in our hearts because your life has influenced our lives forever.

Our sincere condolences to the family. I did not know Rosa well but she was my friend in the St Charles Catholic community. I sat behind her many Sundays and watched her two little grandsons fight over who got to sit by grandma. We knew she was greatly loved.
