Sherrill Jenkins

March 3, 1936 - October 18, 2021

Sherrill Jenkins, 85, of Beaumont, died Monday, October 18, 2021, at Harbor Hospice, Beaumont. She was born March 3, 1936, in Big Spring, to Mildred Spivey Plumlee and Raymond Plumlee.

Sherrill started her career as a barrel rider in the rodeo, propelled her way as a Labor and Delivery RN at Orange Memorial Hospital, and worked as a Supervisor of Nursing at Upjohn Home Health.  She concluded her career advocating for Texas’ elderly population in nursing homes as a RN Surveyor of Nursing Homes for the State of Texas.

Mom/Grandma’s compassion did not stop at caring for her family, or for her fellow man as a nurse, or for every stray animal she found.  She also provided a home to all who wandered across her doorstep. She was a small, but Mighty Lady who proved that love, compassion, and a healthy breakfast could remedy most situations. Her home was a place of peace where everyone came to gather, celebrate, bond and swim & fish.  She was perpetually on “lake time” and was kind and accepting of everyone that came to – Grandma’s Lake House.

Her tenacious spirit and down to earth rhetoric provided guidance to multiple generations. Mom/Grandma was a bulwark in our family and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her son, Jerry Jenkins and his wife, Brenda, of Beaumont; daughter, Tamara Valiente of Hemphill; grandchildren, Kandice Barcus and her husband, Caleb, of Commerce City, Colorado; and Brenton Jenkins and his wife, Brooke, of Mandeville, Louisiana; five great-grandchildren, Adeline, Jackson, Barrett, Lyla, and John, and with one on the way; her beloved poodle Boogie; and countless other animals that were fortunate enough to find their way to her home.

She is preceded in death by her late husband, James Jenkins and her parents.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Humane Society of Southeast Texas, P.O. Box 1629, Beaumont Texas 77704.

Sherrill’s funeral service will be at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, October 24, 2021, at Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont.

Spent time with this great nurse in OB at Orange Memorial many years ago, she encouraged me to become an RN after X-ray training. What a great lady, blessings to her family.
