Summer Leighann Smith
Summer Leighann Smith, 16, of Sour Lake, passed away on Friday, November 21, 2025. She was born on July 17, 2009, to Casey Church and Cody Smith in Beaumont.
From birth, Summer was a bright and outgoing soul who never met a stranger. She had a shine in her that could light up a room just from her smile. She did not like to see others having a bad day, so she made every attempt to make you laugh when you were feeling blue. Summer had a genuine caring spirit who loved with her whole big heart.
Summer enjoyed attending football games and other events at Hardin Jefferson High School, where she attended as a student and was a true Hawk fan. She loved 4-H and spent countless hours preparing to show her animals, for which she always received high rankings. She also loved working with people, whether it was while working at Stormie’s Sno Cones or calling bingo at Beaumont Health Care Center for the residents, who all loved her. Summer wanted to become a teacher to work with children and was ready to start her new job at Children’s World Daycare, where she had attended as a child.
Survivors include her mother, Casey Schlabs and her husband, Jonathan, of Lumberton; father, Cody Smith and his wife, Debbie, of Sour Lake; sisters, Willow Schlabs and Mackenzie Schlabs; brothers, Maverick Schlabs and Laiton Smith; grandparents, Marvin and Colinda Church of Buna and Tommy and Barbara Smith of Sour Lake; great-grandparents, Marvin Q. Church and Frances Church; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, other family members, and many, many friends.
She is preceded in death by her great-grandmothers, Dorothy Morris and Beverly Russell.
A gathering of Summer’s family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Monday, December 1, 2025, at Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. Her funeral service will be 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at First Baptist Church, 765 6th Street, Sour Lake, with her interment to follow at Rosedale Cemetery, Sour Lake.
