Sybil Pauline “Polly” Davis

August 16, 1928 - March 16, 2026

Sybil Pauline Wright Davis, 97, of Beaumont, Texas passed on Monday, March 16, 2026. She was born August 16, 1928, in Newton County, Texas to R. Lillian Curry Wright and Thomas Rupert Wright, Sr. Polly, as she was affectionately known to all her friends, was a beloved daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.

Polly grew up east of Buna, Texas just inside the Newton County line. She attended school in the Buna ISD and graduated from Buna High School after attending Beaumont High School during her Junior year. She enjoyed being a supportive wife and a loving mother to her three children. After they graduated from elementary school, Polly decided to begin a career as a librarian assistant at Fletcher Elementary in the BISD. She caught on quickly and went on to serve as the school’s head librarian for almost 25 years before retiring. Polly had a deep love and appreciation for reading and was enthusiastic for her students to learn how to read. Polly particularly loved sharing stories with the younger students. Her love for books and continuous encouragement of young children to experience the joy of reading endured her to so many students over the years. She often shared with her family stories of students returning to visit her after graduating high school and thanking her for all the encouragement, discipline, and kindness she provided. She excelled at being a caring advocate for educating elementary grade children. She also enjoyed teaching children’s Bible classes and working in her church library.

Polly loved her family immensely and unconditionally. Having lost her mother at the early age of thirteen, she wanted to provide everything she could in raising her three children, whom she cherished until the final moment of her passing, to become successful Christ-centered adults. Oh, and how Miss Polly loved gatherings, whether they be holidays, birthdays, office parties, church socials, dining out or just playing dominoes with friends – primarily, Mexican Train. The holidays meant so very much to her – especially Christmas and Easter. She looked forward to these two events and enjoyed more than anything else having her immediate family be with her celebrating Christ Jesus’ birth and resurrection. Nothing could top having her beloved family and friends come together to celebrate, share gifts and enjoy her delicious home-made chicken & dumplings. They were nothing less than a labor of love and anyone who got a chance to feast on a plate of her dumplings came away happy as a lark. She also loved baking, especially cakes and cookies. Nothing and nobody could top her upside-down pineapple, Italian cream and carrot cakes. So many fond memories of anticipating and enjoying her cooking and baking.

Polly enjoyed the time spent visiting with family and friends more than anything else. However, nothing ever reached the satisfaction of being present with and worshipping her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was passionate about reading her Bible regularly and praying for those in need, especially the incarcerated, for whom she carried a special burden in her heart. Polly wanted all her friends and family to not only come to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior, but to follow Him and obey His wonderful teachings. During the last three weeks she laid in her bed at Christus St. Elizabeth, she never ceased praying for her beloved husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and close friends for their safety, protection, and salvation.

Polly was a born-again Christian, a true fighter, and a formidable trouper in so many ways. She always demonstrated Christ’s Love to whomever she met. What a glorious blessing she has been to so many throughout her long and wonderful life. The family takes such great comfort knowing that Polly is at peace and extremely happy being with Jesus and her Heavenly Father. We can rest assured that the angels are still celebrating her beautiful life! Although Polly will be greatly missed, her sweet, gentle, and beautiful smile will remain in our memories forever.

Polly’s survived by her husband, Samuel Preston Davis, of almost 76 years, whom she married on March 26, 1950, at Highland Avenue Baptist Church in Beaumont, Texas. Other survivors include Mary Annie Krystyniak, sister; children, B. Wade Davis of Beaumont; David Mark Davis and his wife, Kelly, of Montgomery, Texas; Carla Sue Hage and her husband, Gerald Hage, of Montgomery, Texas; grandchildren, Terry J. Dostal, Jr., Stephen P. Polly’s burial will take place at Davis Cemetery, which is situated just outside Colmesneil in Tyler County, Texas. My parents were best friends of Sam and Pauline. They used to double date together before they were married. They got married within one day of each other. I have known them my whole life. I loved Pauline dearly. She was always welcoming, sweet, kind to me. I will miss her. I saw them not long ago in their home. We had a glorious visit; laughing, remembering, catching up on life. She told me she loved me. I will always remember those words. I know my parents are so happy to see their dear sweet friend in Heaven this day. There is such a celebration! My love to the family ( Sam, Wade, Mark and Carla). May God comfort you at this difficult time. My entire family sends you their condolences.

I first met Polly at the PN TEXACO Retirees Luncheons when we would both come with our husbands. She was a delight to visit with & then, later visited her & Sam in their home. I so enjoyed hearing her recounting their earlier years. She was everything a wife & mother needed to be in those days gone by; strong, resilient, loving & supportive. I will miss those visits & our precious Polly.
