Velma Hill

June 5, 1943 - October 21, 2024

“And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes, there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things are passed away.”

Revelation 21:4

Velma Anderson Hill was born on June 5, 1943, to the late Marion Anderson, Sr. and the late Olivia McDuffey Anderson. She confessed in Christ at an early age in Terry, Louisiana, where she grew up, Oak Grove, Louisiana.

In 1959, she met and married Eddie Hill, to this union five children were born. In 1988, she met Matthews Martin, Jr. and spent thirty-seven wonderful years together until her passing.

Velma Hill was a wife and mother of five kids, four girls and one son, and of the whole community. She never met a stranger. Velma worked many years a server and a cook. She was a woman who loved the Lord and her family, and most of all her grandkids, and her great grandkids. She enjoyed life to the fullest and she loved telling jokes. Her favorite thing to do was fishing, crabbing, and spending time on the water.

Velma was preceded in death by both parents; seven brothers, Melvin Anderson, John Henry Anderson, Curley Anderson, Booker Thomas, Jr., William Earl Thomas, and James Austin; three sisters, Gatha Lee, Olivia Redmond, and Ruby Hill; and granddaughter, Shawndella Sam.

Velma departed this life on October 21, 2024.

Those left to cherish her loving memories are her five children, Zelma Hill, David Hill (Dina), Alice Johns (Nick), Lucy Strong (Carl), and Vonda Chattman. One sister, Thelma Ward of New Orleans, Louisiana, and two brothers, Jimmy Earl Thomas and Robert Austin, both of Oak Grove, Louisiana. Her loving partner, Matthews Martin, Jr. of Channelview; fourteen grandkids, thirty great-grandkids; along with a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

A poem from her children:

Mom,

Now that you are gone, we will release you and let you go, we must not tie ourselves to you with tears, instead be happy that we had you for so many years.

Forever Loved,

Your Children
