Wanda Joyce Gilbert

September 4, 1930 - September 9, 2020

Wanda Joyce Turner Fitts Gilbert, 90, of Winnie, died Wednesday, September 9, 2020, at Summer Place Nursing and Rehabilitation. She was born on September 4, 1930, to her parents, Peter and Ellen Turner, of High Island, Texas. She was the youngest of six children that included, Eloise Kirkpatrick; Oscar Turner; Leova Turner; Lena Marshall; and Marvin Turner. She was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church in Winnie, Texas.

Wanda lived a full and meaningful life. Known for her kind, generous and composed demeanor, she was devoted to the ones she loved and committed to her friends and church community. She was the very definition of delightful and gracefully shared that delight with all of us. She will be genuinely missed and so fondly remembered in the biggest way by all she encountered on her life’s journey.

Wanda so loved her “grands” including granddaughters, Brittany Hogan and her husband, Charlie; Katie Perkins and her husband, Joel; Renae M. Poteet and her husband, Bryce; grandson, Paul M. Blumrick, Jr. Her extended family included great-grandchildren, Brylie; Madeline; Callahan; Jace; Emma; Cheynne; Karon; Clyde; Kaydy; and Kaylee. She was also survived by one great-great-grandchild, Callie. A special mention to devoted, lifelong friends, Estolio and Albina Guerrero for their dedicated and loving commitment to Wanda throughout her life. She is also survived by her daughter, Leslie Barber and daughter-in-law, Paige Fitts. Wanda considered herself so fortunate to join Billy Gilbert, Sr.’s family later in life that included, Bill Gilbert, Jr.; Tommy Gilbert and his wife, Deb; and Janie Seidel and her husband Louis.

Wanda was preceded in death by her husbands, Curley Fitts and Billy Gilbert, Sr.; and beloved son, Rusty Fitts.

Mrs. Gilbert’s graveside service will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 12, 2020, at Fairview Cemetery, Winnie, under the direction of Broussard’s, 505 North 12th Street, Nederland.

Finally, the family expresses its deepest appreciation to Wanda’s friend and caregiver, great-niece Tammy K. Davis, for her unyielding commitment to enhancing the quality of life and maintaining the dignity of her cherished Aunt Wanda Joyce. The family also wishes to thank the staff of Summer Place Rehabilitation Center for the compassionate care provided to Wanda.
