I met Carmen in 1978 when she was working at the downtown library in Beaumont. I needed some English to Spanish translation done. After the translation work we became fast friends. In 1978 she asked me and my wife to take her to San Antonio. She never once on the five hour drive said why she wanted to go. Some where on the south side of San Antonio - can't remember where now - she directed us to a cemetery. She got out and walk a few yards to a small marker and kneeled down and appeared to pray. She came back to the car with tears in her eyes. We asked what was wrong and she said, "Jerry was such a pain in the neck but I loved him." Later we met her son Jerry and it all came together who she had visited the summer's day. Once she told us about sitting in math class in her senior year in high school and all the windows on that side of the school was blown in. She said glass was every where.. She said she thought the world was ending. The worst Wednesday of her life she said, a family friend died in the explosion. I remember when her granddaughter was kidnapped by her son-in-law and taken over seas and how Denise made the rescue. Carmen and her brother Augustine were good friends for so many years. Augustine is gone, my wife is gone and now Carmen. Very sad but we will all be together again one day. I miss you girl!

The explosion I referred to in the above comment was the April 16 1947 Texas City disaster.
