Lewis “Taco” Joseph Rodriguez, Sr., 63, passed away at 9:53 a.m., May 26, 2023. He was born on July 12, 1959, in Winshire, Texas to Secundino Rodriguez and Rachel Rodriguez. Mr. Rodriguez graduated from Hamshire Fannett High School in 1977 and started working in the oil fields in 1978. He worked as a casing hand and then operations manager in 1996 until 2012. He moved to Elk City, Oklahoma to be operations manager for Byrd Oilfield Services. Lewis made his home in Leedey, Oklahoma and returned to Texas in February of 2023. Charles Andrew McGaha, 86, of Lubbock, Texas, left this life on Tuesday, May 22, 2023. Charles “Chuck” was born on October 31, 1936, in Bellevue, Texas, to Odie Marshall and Clara Bell McGaha. Raised in the oil patch of West Texas, and following High School in Jal New Mexico, he graduated from Texas Western College (now UTEP) majoring in journalism, and mass communications. Comfortable in the public spotlight, he worked for many years in radio, television, and newspapers across Texas and New Mexico. Chuck had five children from his first marriage who he adored and loved: Terry (deceased), Cindy, Steve, Sheri, and Lori. Chuck married Sheila Hamms in 1980, and transitioned careers into adult probation for the State of Texas, retiring in Houston, Texas. Brenda Karon Fontenot was born on March 27, 1940, in Texarkana, Texas, to Morris Davis and Mildred Hay Davis Moser. On February 7, 1959, she married her high school sweetheart, Charles James (C.J.) Fontenot in Winnie, Texas. There, Brenda and C.J. had been married for sixty-four years and had five children, Chuck, Ronnie, Claudelle, Karon, and Lucy. Brenda passed away on May 22, 2023, after a brief illness with her ever-faithful husband, C.J. by her side. Together, they were the epitome of the commitment and love that marriage symbolizes, they were one. Though times were not always easy, the foundation of their commitment to one another was absolute. Through sickness and in health, they stood by one another. Jerry Menard, 78, of Winnie, went to his home in heaven on Friday, May 12, 2023. He was born on January 12, 1945, in Anuahac, Texas to Elton and Hazel Menard. Those who had the pleasure of knowing Jerry also know he has lived without a speaking voice since October 1963 (due to a car accident). His family and friends never witnessed him feeling sorry for himself and embraced life to the fullest. Mary Katherine Heiner Bauer was born August 14, 1932, to Adolph Heiner, Sr and Lydia Schiesler Heiner in Beaumont Texas. Mary was brought to Jesus in Holy Baptism on September 18, 1932, at St. John Lutheran Church in Beaumont, Texas where she publicly affirmed her faith in the rite of Confirmation on April 25, 1945. She was joined in marriage to Robert Bauer on June 26, 1949, at St John Lutheran Church in Beaumont. She devoted herself to her Lord, to her family, and to their rice farm and cattle ranch. In 1973, they became charter members of Hope Lutheran Church in Winnie, Texas. Mary was involved in many activities at the church. Jerry B. Templin, 88, of La Grange, Texas went to his Heavenly Father’s home, Tuesday, May 2, 2023, after a short battle with AML. Jerry was born to Jesse Robert Templin and Ollie Irene Sanderson (Templin) on February 18, 1935, in Peacock, Texas of Stonewall County. Jerry graduated from Brownwood High School in 1953, where he has kept many lifelong friends and was still a Brownwood Lion at heart. In 1958, Jerry married Velda Carlene Mills of Santa Anna, Texas. Jerry joined the Army National Reserves where he served five years in Fort Hood, Texas. After leaving the Army, Jerry went to work for Union Texas Petroleum which brought his family to Hamshire, Texas. This is where he and Carlene raised their family and made many friends. Myrna Lynn Roy, 81, of Nederland, died Thursday, April 20, 2023. She was born December 1, 1941, to Veda Bernice Fowler Courtney and Clarence Clifton Courtney. Myrna was a sweet and caring person, always giving to others no matter what she had. She loved to crochet, knit, and play piano. She cherished the time spent with family, especially her two granddaughters. Doug Austin, 87, of Winnie, died Friday, April 14, 2023. He was born on December 27, 1935, in Mont Belvieu, to Nezell Pinkston Austin and Oral LeRoy Austin. Doug enjoyed fishing and wood working, volunteer Christian builders, and camping. He was a jack of all trades and loved to tinker. Doug enjoyed playing the guitar and many other instruments. Most of all he loved God and was a devoted Christian and loved his wife, children, and all of his family. Henry Kelly Dunnam, 73, of Vidor, died Saturday, April 1, 2023. He was born on January 12, 1950, in Galveston, to Florence Elizabeth Elkins Dunnam and Marvin Wilson Dunnam, Sr. Henry retired from Goodyear after thirty-eight years of services as a utility operator. She was born August 23, 1929, in Fannett, to Josephine Holst Craigen and Leo Edward Craigen. Lorene was a faithful Catholic her entire life. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Hamshire, where she married Andrus Melancon in 1949. They moved to Beaumont, Texas in 1960, and she attended Our Lady of Assumption. She moved back to Fannett in 1966, and was a loyal member of Catholic Daughters, Altar Society, and choir. She prayed several times a day and said her rosary nightly. Judy Arnold, 80, of High Island, died Sunday, February 26, 2023. She was born February 7, 1943, in Galveston, Texas, to Eva Morse and Lloyd Morse Sr. Judy was the youngest girl of thirteen children. Judy lived a good, Christian life, raising her five children alongside her husband, Floyd Byerley, Sr. She was a member of the Pentecostal Church and raised her children in the same faith. She worked as a homemaker and worked outside of the home when her children were older. She had various jobs in her career; she worked for the school district in High Island for many years and worked as a TDC housekeeper for the prison hospital in Galveston and as a people greeter at Walmart in Texas City. Penny was a career nurse, working in the Winnie Community Hospital for over forty years, caring for our community with skill and a rare kindness many still remember. Joycelyn Tully ran into the arms of her Lord on Tuesday, January 17, 2023. Joycelyn was born the third daughter of James Ozro Hughes and Evelyn Grubbs Hughes on October 14, 1943, in Liberty, Texas. She graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas in 1965. After graduation, she started and ran her own insurance company. Joycelyn’s heart, however, was in education. She became the supervisor over all libraries in the Texas Criminal Justice System. In 1993, Joycelyn married Roy Tully and moved her life to Southeast Texas. She ended her career in education as a counselor at the Mark Stiles Unit helping offenders reintegrate into society after serving their sentences. After retirement, she and Roy traveled extensively and enjoyed their family, especially their children and grandchildren. She adored being a Mimi. Donald Lynn McCain, 61, of Winnie, died Sunday, January 15, 2023, at Harbor Hospice of Beaumont. He was born June 17, 1961, in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, to Joyce and Carl McCain. Survivors include his wife, Patsy McCain; children, Joshua McCain and wife, Christina; Jeremy McCain; and Melisa McCain and husband, Christopher; grandchildren, David McCain; Robert McCain; and Aubrey Sue; and siblings, Deborah Owens; Mona Polete; Patty McCain; Sue Miller; James Glenn McCain; Rosemary McCain; Keith McCain; Carla Blouin; Judy Bagnato; and Mark McCain. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, David McCain, Richard McCain, and Duwain McCain; and grandfather, J.B. “B.B.” Latham. Betty Bice King, 89, of Winnie, died Saturday, Janurary 7, 2023. She was born September 17, 1933, to Addie Maggie Lee Cole and Herman Bird Bice. Betty enjoyed baking and cooking. She loved music, especially country and gospel, fishing, and watching the Dallas Cowboys. Above all else, Betty cherished her family, everything she did revolved around them.
