Jimmy Doyle “Jim” Gregory was born on May 2, 1934, in Childress, Texas to George Marshall Gregory and Lillie Mae Baker Gregory. He was the youngest of five children. He died on Saturday, January 17, 2026, in Beaumont, Texas. Although he was born in Childress, Jim always proudly claimed Turkey, Texas as his home. Jim grew up and went to work on a seismograph crew, which is how he met his wife, JoAnne Thomas Gregory. The story is that he kept making up excuses to go to the bank where she worked just to see her until he finally got the nerve to ask her on a date. And the rest, as they say, is history. Jim and JoAnne were married July 17, 1954, in Hearne, Texas. They traveled with the seismograph crew until Jim was drafted into the Army, where he served in Wiesbaden, Germany. David Herbert Murrell, 71, of Winnie, died Wednesday, January 14, 2026. He was born to Lucy Felter Leger and Joseph Wayne Murrell on January 21, 1954, in Winshire. David attended East Chambers and graduated in 1972. After high school, he attended Texas A&M University where he met his wife, Dina, farmed with his dad during the summers, then went on to earn his degree in Agronomy in 1976. After completing college, he moved back to Winnie to start a family and farm full-time as a third-generation farmer. In 1977, he put his first crop in the ground. His dad, brother and he farmed rice and soybeans for many years and ran a small cattle operation. David continued to farm until 2020 when he retired. Jack Randolph Delafield, 85, of Cove, passed away on Friday, January 2, 2026. He was born on February 7, 1940, in Laneville, Texas, to Mabel Youngblood Delafield and William Bryan Delafield. Jack retired after a long and dedicated career in education, where he taught with High Island ISD, Deer Park ISD, and Lee College in Baytown. He also served the communities of Deer Park and La Porte as a City Inspector. A talented woodcarver and craftsman, Jack even built his own home — a true reflection of his patience, skill, and determination. He enjoyed spending his time gardening, hunting, and fishing, but above all, he cherished his family and loved them deeply. Tommye Lucille Onstott Hodges, 91 of Hamshire, died Christmas Eve morning at her home after a lengthy illness. Tommye was born October 8, 1934 in San Angelo, Texas to Thomas Alderson Onstott and Lucille Cerena Early. She attended Water Valley High School graduating in 1952. She married the love of her life, Donald Lester Hodges, on August 31, 1951. Their legacy lives on through their children Linda Dianne and Steven Phillip, both of Winnie. Tommye found joy and comfort in her relationships with her animals. Her heart was especially tender toward her horses, who seemed to sense and return that kindness. Clyde Defrates, Jr. was born October 10, 1925, to Clyde and Alma Rothman Defrates in Port Arthur, Texas. He passed away peacefully December 16, 2025, in his apartment in Houston. Clyde was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Port Arthur, on October 25, 1925. He was an active member of Redeemer Lutheran and St. John’s Lutheran Church, both in Beaumont. Clyde graduated early from Thomas Jefferson in Port Arthur so he could enlist in the US Army. In February 1944, he joined the 8th Army Air Corps as a ball turret (belly) gunner on a B17. He was based in England and flew 33 missions over Germany on the Mississippi Miss. He and his entire crew returned safely from each of those missions, including missions over Berlin. Stephen Bailey Stelly, 74, of Winnie died Wednesday, December 10, 2025. He was born on January 16, 1951, to Pansy Block Stelly and Summa Lee Stelly in Lafayette, Louisiana. Survivors include children, Walt Stelly and his wife, Mindy and Jeni Vidrine and her husband, Dave; four grandchildren, Slade Stelly, Adam Vidrine, Skylar Vidrine and Grant Vidrine; two brothers, Marc Stelly and David Stelly; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, John Stelly. A Celebration of Life for Mr. Stelly will be 4:00 p.m., Friday, January 16, 2026, at the family’s residence, 10720 FM 1663, Winnie. Suzanne Pell Clubb, 81, of Hamshire, died Sunday, December 7, 2025. She was born to George W. Pell and Marie Ewart Pell, on December 14, 1943, in New Orleans, Louisiana. William Sanders Edwards Jr. of Winnie passed away on November 5, 2025. Sandy was born on June 4, 1946, to Yvonne Fitzpatrick Edwards and William Sanders Edwards Sr. in Beaumont, Texas. He grew up in Stowell, Texas and was the oldest of Mr. Billy and Miss Evie’s thirteen children. Sandy graduated from Allen Academy in Bryan, Texas in 1965. Shortly after graduation Sandy proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1967-1970. He trained as a Nike Missile Test equipment technician at Redstone Arsenal in Alabama before being transferred to White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. Allen C. Cathey, 77, of Winnie, died Monday, October 27, 2025. He was born on February 7, 1948, in Dalhart, to Robbie Marriott and Floyd E. Cathey. Allen loved playing cards, golfing, bowling, shooting pool, bingo, hunting, and fishing. He loved putting puzzles together and cooking soup, sharing it with everyone. Jeannette Eiden, 92, died peacefully, surrounded by family, Saturday, October 11, 2025, at her home in Winnie. She was born on June 5, 1933, in Thayer, Kansas, to Arthur and Agnes Nelson. Jeannette and her husband, John, lived in Winnie from1966 until they moved to Beaumont in 1980. Jeannette was a nurse at several places, including Winnie Medical Center, MASH, Baptist Hospital and UTMB. After John’s passing in 2021, Jeannette moved back to Winnie in 2023 to live with her daughter, Theresa. She spent her life focused on her husband and family. A lifelong resident of Fannett, Homer’s life was deeply rooted in the Fannett area, where his family were some of the first to settle. With those roots close to his heart, Homer lived a life defined by hard work, devotion to the family, and love of community. Born and raised in Fannett, Homer left home briefly to serve his country as a proud United States Marine. After his service, he returned to the rice fields alongside his father, where he farmed rice for 38 years. After retiring from farming, Homer went to work for Jefferson County Precinct 3, where his coworkers became like family, especially after the passing of his beloved wife, Anita.
