Roy G. Sterling

November 29, 1943 - February 5, 2023

Roy G. Sterling, 79, of Buna, died Sunday, February 5, 2023, at Christus Southeast Texas – St. Elizabeth, Beaumont. He was born November 29, 1943, in Diboll, to Ellen Lowe Sterling and Gibson Sterling.

Roy is retired from Dupont in Beaumont and has continued to work in the industry as a millwright, machinist and vibrations specialist, as well as a  member of the Port Neches Masonic Lodge.  He has been involved with horses most of his life and was a member of The Jefferson County Sherriff’s Posse and served as President for numerous years and served as one of the Adult Leaders in our Jefferson County 4-H group  with Mom.  He has continued his love of horses with a barn full of racehorses of which some he continues to race today! Roy always said “I will go one day – but, it will not be in a rocking chair!” and by the Grace of God, that is just what he did!

Dad loved his family “BIG” and spent his time making treasured memories with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren that will last a lifetime for all…hunting, fishing, horses, horseshows, rodeos, football, baseball, basketball, and just doing the “Roy Thing”, whatever that was at the moment.

Roy is survived by his daughter, Carla Vaughn of Nome; son, Clay Sterling of Buna; brother, Bill Sterling and his wife, Sue, of Buna; sister, Patsy Collins of Winnie; brother, Mickey Sterling of Gist; grandchildren, Cayce Ames and her husband, Glenn, of Sour Lake; Kalie Mazzola and her husband, Anthony, of Sour Lake; Grayson Sterling of Buna; Ryleigh Sterling of Buna; great-grandchildren, Brantley Ames; Teal Mazzola; Braxden Ames; and Baby Mazzola (on the way), all of Sour Lake.

He is preceded in death by his dad, Gibson Sterling; mom, Ellen Sterling; brother, Harvey Sterling; and his wife, Carolyn Sterling.

A gathering of Mr. Sterling’s family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Friday, February 10, 2023, at Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. Susan and Bob Wisenbaker says:

Bob and I worked with Roy at DuPont. I really relied on his rotating equipment expertise. It was always fun talking politics with him – one of the last you could respectfully disagree with without offense. A rarity. He was very reliable when we had problems, if a bit crotchety after hours. He would always answer my call as long as I didn’t let anyone know he answered. Made me laugh and feel special even though I am sure he did the same for everyone. We were sorry to hear of his passing. He was a good man.

    Grady Hatton says:

I had the privilege of working with and getting to know Roy while I was at Dupont. He was just one of those unique individuals that you never forget. I enjoyed our many conversations especially politics and the once in a while when I could, but seldom, get one up on him.
To the family I can only imagine the hole that the loss of Roy has left. But I am also sure he would tell you to carry on. I wish you all the peace and comfort that our Lord and Savior can bestow on you.
