Gerald James Speyrer

June 26, 1935 - September 23, 2023

Gerald James Speyrer, 88, of LaBelle, passed away September 23, 2023.  He was born on June 26, 1935 to Eva and Horace Speyrer.

He spent his early years in Port Arthur, later moving to LaBelle in his early teens. He graduated from Fannett High School in 1954 after becoming a 4-year letterman on the 6-man football team and earning the nickname ‘Sparky’.  He helped the team become Bi-District Champs in 1952 and Regional Champs in 1953, and also earned a spot on the All-State All Star team in 1954 sponsored by Texas Six-Man Coaches Association.

After graduation, he became a pipefitter/welder and member of Local 195. Starting as an apprentice, he successfully climbed the ladder to management before retirement.

Gerald was a proven outdoorsman.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was a radio-controlled model airplane enthusiast.  When not participating in his hobbies, he and his wife Jeri, could be found in the bleachers supporting Greg Askew and grandson, Jake Askew playing football for Nederland High School or enjoying a game at Hamshire Fannett High School watching his brother, nephews, or recently Jake Speyrer playing for the Horns.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Jeri; children, Lindy Goodwin (Mike), Dana Kahla, Joni Barrow (Ricky), and Greg Askew (Julie); grandchildren, Christopher Goodwin, Quinten Kahla, Cullen Barrow, Jake Askew (Crystal),  J.T. Askew, Jason Goodwin & Family; Mark Goodwin & Family; Tyler Kahla & Family; Kris Kahla, Jeremy Barrow, Mandy Fortenberry (Evan) & Family; Allison DaCosta; 13 great-grandchildren, friends, and faithful dog, Buddy.

He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, H.J. Speyrer.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Gerald’s nurse, Keisha, for her special care and to Harbor Hospital and staff for their attentive and professional care.

A gathering of Mr. Speyrer’s family and friends will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Thursday, September 28, 2023, at Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. A private interment of his cremated body will be held at Burrell Cemetery, LaBelle.
