Marajane Parker Lewis

February 4, 1931 - October 3, 2023

Marajane Parker Lewis, 92, passed away at her home in Beaumont, Texas, on October 3, 2023. She was born in Elkhart Indiana on February 4, 1931, to Arthur Parker and Arloine Myers Parker.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Aloine Parker; infant son, William P Lewis; husband, William (Bill) Lewis; and her brother, Arthur C Parker III.

Marajane enjoyed life to the fullest. She loved to dance, get together with friends, and liked to do interior design. She worked at the Beaumont Enterprise as a Personnel Administrator for over 25 years, the last 7 of which she also cared for her home bound husband.

after retirement she served as a volunteer at Baptist Hospital in the ICU area for 14 years. She loved this job and interacting with people. She spoke Spanish fluently and enjoyed surprising people with her language skills.

Marajane loved animals of all kinds and had a heart for every stray in the neighborhood. She had a strong wit and dry sense of humor that we all loved. A little sweet and a little spicy. She was fiercely independent and lived that way until the last few weeks of her life.  We would like to thank her caregivers, Flavia, Ammi, and Amy for the wonderful care they provided that allowed her to be at home during the last few weeks of her life.

Marajane is survived by her daughter, Deborah Jamal and husband, Bassem; grandson, Zachary; her beloved nephew, Arthur C Parker IV; lifelong friend, Alva Ellison; her cherished dog, Roxy; and a host of friends and neighbors who loved her, especially Michelle, Darlene, Diane, and Jackie.

As one of Marajane’s greatest passions was her love for animals, memorial contributions can be made to the Humane Society of Southeast Texas, 2050 Spindletop Avenue, Beaumont, Texas 77705, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), 424 East 92nd Street, New York, New York 10128, or any other organization of choice.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 6, 2023, in the chapel at Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas, 3080 College Street, Beaumont. Her cremation arrangements were handled through Broussard’s Crematorium, Beaumont, under the direction of Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont.

Dearest Deborah and Family, It was very unusual that I passed near your Mother’s home in West End last week. I wondered if she was still living there. I did not stop because I do not walk unassisted any longer. I’ve thought of Mrs. Lewis and your dad often. I’m sorry for your loss, but you know that Heaven has gained another angel. It is with much love and compassion that I close with
    our wonderful memories.
