Marvin Louis McEachern, Sr.

Marvin Louis McEachern, Sr., 94, of Beaumont, died Sunday, December 10, 2023. He was born May 19, 1929, in Mathis, to Gracie McFarland McEachern and Howell Louis McEachern. Dad Loved the Lord and his church family. His faithfulness inspired many people by driving to church every Sunday, even at 94. He was still driving and playing Bingo 5 days a week.

He cherished his wife and his marriage of sixty-two years.

As a young man, he loved sports, football, track, and baseball. He was a standout in baseball and set a record that stood for many years by striking out 19 batters out of 21 in a 7-inning game. I have many fond memories of him taking my fishing. He had a passion for the sport, even caught a 78-pound drum that stood as a state record for over twenty-years.

He drove a truck several times throughout his life and rolled over one million safe miles driving for Good Year Chemical.

He got interested in metal detecting (coin shooting) in the early 60’s. This occupied many hours, days, and vacations. His spare time was filled with scrap metal. I cannot imagine all of the appliances he tore apart. He bought a brand new 1984 Chevy pickup truck with his scrap money.

Vacations and traveling the USA were always fun and even more so with his grandchildren. He loved people, he could and would talk to anyone. He loved telling stories of his life and Navy days.

His proudest was testifying how the Lord had worked in his life. There were many, but the life changing story was when dad had been out of work for almost two years. He would work day jobs and pick-up jobs, he got on his knees by his bed one night. He was at his wits end wondering how to go on. Could not see a way to support mom and me. Through tears flooding his eyes he asked God for help. The very next day, three different people came to his door and offered him a job! The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost showed him the way.

Saying goodbye is so hard. I obviously know it’s part of life, but it’s one of those things I just don’t want to accept and one of those things I don’t process very well. I hold it together externally the best I can, and much like losing our baby boy, I don’t address my own internal hurt when losing someone so special. A week ago, we took my 94-year-old grandpa to play bingo. His mind was still so sharp, and he still was a jokester. His beautiful blue eyes were the most gentle eyes. It was hard to watch his earthly body deteriorate, and his mind still serve him so well. I’m humbled to have known his character. The pure trust he put into God’s promise through so many heartaches in his own life, is the example I will continue to carry into my life and hopefully instill in my own children. I know he’s with the love of his life for eternity and they are celebrating their reunion.

Marvin is survived by his son, “Big Lou” McEachern and his wife, Terea; grandchildren, Chris McEachern and his fiancé, Monica Hibdon, all of Beaumont; Laura Malmberg and her husband, Aubrey, of Fannett; Will McEachern and his wife, Jessica, of Lumberton; JeannAnn Hatcher-Moore and her husband, TJ Moore, of Fannett; David Martin of Vidor; Beth Sanford of Orange; great-grandchildren, Taylin McEachern, Marley Floyd, Dallen Floyd, Edith Jaye Malmberg, Noah McEachern, Emery McEachern, Jonah McEachern, Vance Moore, Olivia Moore, and Mason Moore; and numerous friends, co-workers, church family, and extended family,

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Pearl Strait McEachern; children, Sherri Hatcher, Vicki Jo McEachern; Edith Sue Martin; great-grandchildren, Eden James Malmberg; and brother, Ardis McEachern.

A memorial service for Mr. McEachern will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, December 28, 2023, at First Baptist Church, 23504 Highway 124, Hamshire.

His  cremation arrangements were handled through Broussard’s Crematorium, Beaumont, under the direction of Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont.
